How ironic it is! After all garlands are garlands, they don't see whether it neck of the train or neck of those who died in the Elphinstone stampede. ********************************** For someone like me who has been travelling by local trains the news of Elphinstone Road Station stampede was a unbelievable.
After few hours of the calamity, as I was taking a train to Parel, I could see garlands everywhere on trains, every compartment, every window. Just a day before Dusshera every year Mumbaikars decorate the locals where they spend fair amount of time travelling, knowing each other, sharing dabbas, playing cards, singing bhajans, shopping clothes, cosmetics and chocolates! Mumbaikars are by default railfans, not only because they don't have options but also because of the memories attached to it. On Friday hours after the stampede I took this photo and I can clearly understand the emotion of this picture. It could have been me or any one close to me. Spine chilling, yes it is. But the pain is unbearable. I don't know who they were but I know exactly how they felt. My city will never forget this, I will never forget this and no Mumbaikar will ever forget this. Let that sink in.
