World Lion Day 2026
India remains the last wild home of the Asiatic lion — a conservation story built on decades of protection, persistence, and the quiet work of countless people. From the edge of disappearance to a growing presence in Gir and beyond, their recovery shows what focused effort can accomplish.
Still, the work isn’t done. A single, concentrated habitat, increasing human pressures, and the need for safer, connected spaces continue to shape their future.
Today, we honour the progress made, recognise the gaps that remain, and recommit to a future where lions don’t just endure, but truly flourish in the wild.
For the lions, and for the ecosystems they hold together.
