Gauri is a transgender social activist hailing from a conservative family in Pune. Raised by her grandmother, Gauri always felt more inclined towards the female gender and secretly started dressing up as a woman. Gauri left her home and came to Mumbai after her family could not accept her transition to a woman. Humsafar Trust founded by Ashok Row Kavi is the largest and oldest LGBT Organization in India, covering the issues of s*xual minorities in our country, Humsafar Trust helped her transit from a man to a woman, from Ganesh to Gauri. Even when she had no roof over her head, Gauri started an NGO in 2000 in Malad, Mumbai. ‘Sakhi Char Chowghi’ which aims to provide space of freedom to all transgenders in the city. They also promote safe s*x with counseling. She continues to fight for basic rights, even when it has been three years since they were recognized as a third gender. She has dedicated all her life to providing transgenders, hijras, homos*xual men, and female s*x workers among other groups, a space of freedom and safety. Her daughter Gayatri, was left orphaned and was about to be sold off in 2001 when her mother, a s*x worker, died of HIV. Gauri chose to adopt the little girl and raise her as her own daughter.

"गौरी सावंत"
ट्रांसजेंडर सोशल ऐक्टिविस्ट
पुणे के भवानीपीठ में एक मराठी परिवार में जन्मी गौरी सावंत का बचपन का नाम गणेश नंदन था। पिता पुलिस अधिकारी थे और मां गृहिणी। गौरी के माता-पिता उनको इस दुनिया में नहीं लाना चाहते थे। मां ने सातवें महीने में गर्भपात कराना चाहा, लेकिन डॉक्टरों के इनकार करने पा गौरी को जन्म देना पड़ा। पांच साल की उम्र में मां की मृत्यु हो गई। बढ़ती उम्र के साथ गौरी को एहसास हुआ कि वे दूसरे लड़कों जैसी नहीं हैं। 10 साल की थी, जब चाची ने पूछा था कि बड़े होकर क्या बनना चाहते हो? तब उसने जवाब दिया था- मां बनना चाहती हूं। गौरी को बाहर और परिवार में उपहास का सामना करना पड़ा। तब दुखी गौरी ने 17 की उम्र में घर छोड़ दिया। जेब में बस 60 रुपए लिए गौरी सिद्धि विनायक मंदिर पहुंची। जहां प्रसाद में मिले लड्डूओं से पेट-पूजा की। इसके बाद एक दोस्त ने उन्हें अपने घर में पनाह दी। बेटे के घर छोड़कर भागने से नाराज पिता ने जीते जी गौरी का अंतिम संस्कार कर रिश्ता तोड़ लिया। तब गौरी समाज सेवा कार्यों में जुट गईं। गौरी ने एक सेक्स वर्कर की बेटी को गलत हाथों में जाने से बचाया। फिर उसकी बेटी गायत्री को गोद लेने का फैसला किया। इसके लिए तब उनकी काफी आलोचना हुई थी। गौरी अब घर से भागे हुए ट्रांसजेंडर्स के लिए मलाड के मालवणी में 'सखी चार चौघी' नाम से आश्रय स्थल चलाती हैं। उनका कहना है कि जो परेशानियां उन्होंने झेली हैं, वो कोई और न झेले। गौरी के जीवन की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि यह है कि महाराष्ट्र में चुनाव आयोग ने उन्हें वोटरों के बीच जागरूकता फैलाने के लिए देश की पहली ट्रांसजेडर इलेक्शन ऐंबैसडर बनाया।
