Jama Masjid 2: The Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa, commonly known as the Jama Masjid, in Old Delhi, is one of India's most recognisable religious sites. Despite, since the early 00s, drawing large numbers of tourists and worshippers alike, the history of this mosque was not always one of peace. After being built in the mid 1600s by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the 1800s it became a bastion of conflict during the British rule in the country - with the goras initially looking after the structure, but then closing it for use, razing other mosques in Delhi, and even utilising it as barracks for soldiers during the 1857 mutiny. After being "returned" to Muslim populations, from the late 1800s onwards, its courtyard drew gathering for peace and discussion; today, it is one India's most famous tourist sites and is frequently featured in films that are shot in Old Delhi.

From the Archives: The unspeakably, hauntingly beautiful St David's Cathedral, Pembrokeshire in Wales (June 2024).

Exciting and pockmarked as the history of construction, destruction, control and restoration -- spanning nearly an entire millenium from the early 1000s until present time -- of this magnificent structure is, more intriguing are the local legends attached to it.
In particular (as seen from Wikipedia): Gerald of Wales in the 13th century relates the strange story of a marble footbridge leading from the church over the Alun rivulet in St Davids. The marble stone was called "Llechllafar" ("the talking stone") because it once spoke when a co**se was carried over it to the cemetery for interment. The effort of speech had caused it to break, despite its size of ten feet in length, six in breadth and one in thickness. This bridge was worn smooth due to its age and the thousands of people who had walked over it, however the superstition was so great that co**ses were no longer carried over it.

I can't say I saw or heard anything out of the ordinary while I was there, but who's to say which creatures come out to play after dark :)
