announced in 1992 and Sim released to the public in 1994 by BellSouth. It combined phone, pager, fax, and PDA features with a touchscreen, stylus, calendar, address book, and email/fax capabilities, laying the groundwork for modern smartphones despite its high price and short battery life.
Key Features of the IBM Simon:
Touchscreen: A monochrome resistive touchscreen operated with a stylus.
Apps & Functions: Included a calendar, address book, calculator, world clock, notepad, and predictive text.
Connectivity: Could send faxes and emails, making it a portable office.
Launch: Unveiled at the COMDEX trade show in 1992 and sold in 1994.
Why it Mattered:
Although a commercial flop (selling only
50,000 units) due to its cost and limitations, the Simon proved that a mobile phone could be an all-in-one personal device, influencing later designs like BlackBerry and eventually paving the way for the iPhone and Android devices.
