On March 23rd we went on two safaris!! One was bright and early during sunrise, while the other was later in the evening during sunset (optimal times for animal viewings). In the morning we saw many beautiful elephants and monkeys again, but the evening Safari had a bit more excitement and we saw a TIGER! It was so amazing to learn so much about tiger conservation over the course of this semester and then literally be 15 feet away from one in the wild! It was such a beautiful day where we also learned about the vet clinic at the park and how they are able to step in and aid tigers who might experience infections/serious injuries. 🐅

On March 22nd we met with the Forest Department Head for Jim Corbett National Park to learn about how Project Tiger was started, and hear about the Ecodevelopment Communities located in Corbett. Following that discussion we got to meet with a few local EDCs and learn about beehive fencing/honey collection, forest protection, and a new bakery located in the park that will allow women in the EDC to run a business! It was so wonderful to connect with the community members and learn about how they interact with the wildlife. After the day was spent learning these new activities we got to go on a 3 hour safari through the park to view the wildlife! We safe many different flora and fauna, plenty of monkeys, and got up close to some elephants. Truly a beautiful day!

Fell a bit behind on my updates due to illness, but I am now back safely in America and have successfully received strong medicine so I am back on the mend! I am going to recap the second half of the trip now!

On March 21st we had a 7 hour drive to Jim Corbett National Park which is the first national park in India and is a part of the largest Corbett Tiger Reserve. The drive was super enlightening on how many people live in India. We also got to experience many beautiful views and eat McDonald’s!!! It was a long drive, however once we arrived at the next hotel we got to chill and rest before a busy few days ahead.

Some wildlife pictures from the first few days! My favorite was seeing elephants on our Periyar boat ride. We ended up seeing 11 elephants in total. The baby elephant we saw in the group of six was only 2 weeks old!! 🐘

On day 4 we spent the morning speaking with many different Ecodevelopment Communities, and the Forest Department to discuss what activities they run in Periyar National Park and learn about the protection of animals. We had another elephant leaf lunch which was super fun again! After that we went on a boat ride in Periyar to explore the wildlife and ended up seeing so many elephants! (Real camera pics to come!)

Truly a magical day! Today consisted of meeting with the Forest Deputy of Periyar Tiger Reserve to discuss Project Tiger and other conservation acts that occur throughout the reserve. We communicated some of the information we have learned in class with many of the forest leaders. Following that discussion we had 2 interactions with ecodevelopment communities that were located in buffer areas of the reserve. These communities work with the forest staff and perform various jobs such as fishing, cultivating land for pepper, tribal dancing, and honey collection. It was wonderful to meet with these groups and have conversation on their lives, as well as tiger conservation. For lunch we had a traditional meal that consisted of many different foods on an elephant leaf that we ate with our hands! It was such an inspiring day and we experienced so much wonderful hospitality from the community members 🧡

Today we had a 5 hour journey to Periyar Spice Village! We will be staying here the next few days as we explore Periyar National Park. It was beautiful to drive through the mountains and see many cool land uses such as the tea plantations and terracing agriculture ☕️🐄🌾
