In ancient times, the celestial river Ganga flowed only in the heavens. King Bhagiratha, wishing to liberate the souls of his ancestors, performed intense penance to bring her to Earth. Moved by his devotion, Ganga agreed to descend.
But her divine force was so immense that if she fell directly to Earth, it would shatter the planet. Therefore, Bhagiratha prayed to Shiva for help.
Out of compassion, Shiva stood calmly in the Himalayas and received the mighty river upon his matted locks. The roaring celestial waters crashed into his hair, but instead of destroying the world, they became trapped within his jata (locks).
Only when Shiva gently released her did the sacred river flow down to Earth in graceful streams. From that moment, Ganga became known as ShivaтАЩs crown river, sanctifying the land and liberating those who bathe in her waters.
The story represents a deep idea: divine power must be guided by wisdom and balance, which Shiva embodies.
