Lighting technique: Split lighting

Split lighting is a portrait lighting technique where the light source illuminates exactly one side of the subject’s face, leaving the other side in shadow. This creates a strong sense of drama, contrast, and dimension.
• Setup: Position the light at about a 90-degree angle to the subject — directly to their left or right — and at roughly eye level.
• Effect: The result divides the face into two equal halves — one bright, one dark — emphasizing facial structure and creating a mysterious or intense mood.
• Common uses: Dramatic portraits, character studies, and moody or artistic photography.
