Police foil BJP protest against wine shops in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 15: Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday held a protest in Srinagar against the sale of liquor in Kashmir, demanding a complete ban on wine shops in the Valley.

The protest march started from the Ram Munshibagh area in Sonwar and proceeded towards Gupkar Road, where the residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is located.

Led by party leaders and workers, the protesters raised slogans against the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference government and accused it of encouraging liquor sales despite opposition from various sections of society.

Police later intercepted the march and foiled the protest before the demonstrators could move further towards Gupkar, officials said.

Speaking to reporters, BJP state co-media incharge Sajid Yousuf Shah said the party was seeking an immediate ban on liquor sales in Kashmir, describing the issue as linked to the Valley’s social and religious values.

“The people of Kashmir have consistently opposed liquor sales and the government must respect public sentiment by shutting wine shops across the Valley,” Shah said.

He said tourists visit Kashmir for its natural beauty, culture and hospitality and not for alcohol consumption.

Shah also alleged that the National Conference was attempting to defend the promotion of liquor in the region despite public opposition.

He said the BJP would continue its campaign until the administration takes concrete steps to stop the sale of alcohol in Kashmir.(KNS).

Illegal structures of alleged drug peddler razed in Kulgam as anti-narcotics crackdown intensifies

Three shops built without permission demolished in Frisal; authorities say action part of ongoing drive to break drug supply networks

Muneeb Nazeer

Kulgam, May 14 (JKNS): In a major action against narcotics-related activities, authorities on Thursday demolished three illegal shops allegedly belonging to a drug peddler in Chinigam area of Frisal in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district as part of the ongoing crackdown on drug networks.

Officials told news agency JKNS that the demolition drive was carried out early morning at around 8:00 AM against structures allegedly owned by Jahangir Ahmed Bhat son of Muhammad Ismail Bhat, a resident of Chinigam, who is booked in an NDPS case linked to FIR No. 69/2022.

The officials said the shops had been constructed illegally on one kanal and 13 marlas of land falling under Survey No. 196 Min without obtaining mandatory “Change of Land Use” permission. The action was jointly executed by police and revenue authorities under the supervision of Tehsildar Frisal and DSP Operations HatiPora.

Authorities said the operation reflects the administration’s firm resolve to target the financial and logistical networks associated with drug peddling and narcotics trade in the region.

They added that strict and sustained action against drug smugglers, illegal constructions linked to narcotics activities, and other elements involved in the drug ecosystem will continue across the district. (JKNS)
