Supermoon, 3rd December 2017, Surat.
A rare optical phenomenon occurred in Surat last night.
A large circular halo with rainbow like radiance was seen around the Super Moon.
This phenomenon, called as 22° halo or Moon Dog, occurs due to formation of millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere which are reflection and refraction of the light.
There’s an old weather saying: ring around the moon means it's going to rain soon. There’s truth to this saying, because high cirrus clouds often come before a storm.
