Draupadi is one of the most celebrated heroines of Indian epic, Mahabharata.
One of the most searing moments in the Indian mythology is the vastraharana, the disrobing of Draupadi in the Kaurava court.
Among the many relationships that one reads about and sees in the Mahabharata, the one between Lord Krishna and Draupadi is a beautiful and awe-inspiring one.

Drunk in power Duryodhana asks Dushasana to strip off Draupadi’s saree in a filled courtroom clothing as a mark of humiliation.
As the same happened, Draupadi’s 5 husbands, the Pandavas (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva) hung their heads in shame and could not come to their wife’s rescue.

It is said that when Draupadi was praying for her plight, Lord Krishna came to her rescue.
No matter how much the saree was tried to be stripped off, its length kept on increasing. Krishna sent immeasurable reams of cloth to keep Draupadi covered, thus defeating the evil and nefarious designs of the Kaurava princes. The Kauravas' cheerharan failed and Draupadi was saved by the humiliation of being stripped of clothes in a full-court with even elders like Bheeshma and Vidur looking on helplessly.

There is a common folklore in the nation as to how Draupadi tying Krishna's wounded finger with silken pallu is synonymous with what women practice on Rakshabandhan, tying rakhi on to their brother's wrist, who in turn must protect his sister just as Krishna stood by Draupadi.

From the land of ‘God’s own country’, Kerala’s Kasavu emerges as one of the finest traditional sarees which define the essence of the beauty of every woman in Kerala.

Here are some interesting facts about the traditional kasavu saree that makes it stand out in a country full of myriad patterns and bold colours.

Kasavu is a handwoven cream colored saree with gold border which holds Kerala’s cultural legacy from ages and is mostly worn for events, pooja, temples, weddings and funerals.

The term kasavu actually refers to the zari used in the border of the saree. It is also the name of the fabric used in the manufacturing of this saree.

The traditional Kerala Kasavu saree can also be worn as dhoti (by men) and it is called Kasavu mundu.

A plain saree with just a border and stripe on the end piece takes three to five days. But if it features motifs, it can take up to a month because it is all done by hand wefting.

Sonam Kapoor was spotted wearing Kasavu saree in the film ‘Aisha.’

‘Onam’, a festival that is widely celebrated in Kerala witnesses the beauty of Kasavu embroidered attires among the young and the older women especially while participating in their folk dances every year.

The 2018 Kerala flood affected a lot of looms in Kochi as the water entered multiple stock rooms resulting in lakhs worth of stock being stained.

Phulkari Saree: Punjab’s Romantic Affair

A face of fashion that finds its first mention in Punjabi folklore of the romantic protagonists Heer and Ranjha, Phulkari is arguably a dream for every girl.

Here are some interesting facts about this trending wear that is adored across the globe.

There are different theories about the origin of Phulkari. One such belief is that this embroidery was prevalent in different parts of the country as far back as the 7th century CE but survived only in Punjab.

In Punjab, it was popularly believed that the birth of a girl child in the family was auspicious. The mother and grandmothers would start embroidering Phulkari dupattas upon her birth because they believed that she would be the creator for future generations.

According to Pal (1960) in his seminal essay on the history and use of the Phulkari published by Patiala University, Traditionally, women would embroider Phulkaris without using stencils. Pal (1960) states that women would clean their courtyards and invite friends and family to ceremonially begin the process of embroidering a Phulkari. Folk songs would be sung on this occasion.

Phulkari Saree is one of the most preserved designs and art from India. The main characteristics of Phulkari embroidery are use of darn stitch on the wrong side of coarse cotton cloth with coloured silken thread. Punjabi women create innumerable alluring and interesting designs and patterns by their skilful manipulation of the darn stitch.

A phulkari garment should be washed with delicate hands and should be ironed on the reverse side.

A heavy phulkari work saree can cost almost as much as a pure banarasi silk saree or even more at times.

It’s made its presence felt in Bollywood too. Aditi Rao Hydari, a prominent bollywood face, was spotted wearing Sukriti & Aakriti’s Phulkari Lehenga for an event, costing around an incredible INR 2 Lac!

Bandhani Saree: The vibrant art statement

Bandhani, also known as Bandhej Saree, is a type of tie-dye textile specially found in Gujarat and Rajasthan dating back to Indus Valley Civilization.

Here are some facts to go through about this beautiful art form.

•Bandhani handicraft uses a technique involving dyeing a fabric which is tied tightly with a thread at several points, thus producing a variety of patterns like Chandrakala, Bavan Baug, Shikari etcetera; depending on the manner in which the cloth is tied.

•The dyes are mostly made of natural ingredients such as leaves, roots, and flowers.

•As with other Indian textiles, in Bandhani too different colours convey different meanings. The vibrant spectrum of colors are mostly yellow, red, green and black.

•The costing is decided according to the number of tie-ups in the fabric/garment. The most intricate design in a saree will consist of approximately 75,000 dots or tie-ups.

•From Janhvi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt to Kangana Ranaut, almost every Bollywood fashionista has infused a slew of looks in the versatile bandhani print.

•The coronavirus crisis led to hardships in selling sarees forcing craftspeople making bandhani saree to turn their hands to mask-making.

Kanchipuram Saree- The Dream weave

Made of Mulberry silk thread thicker than almost all other silks, the Kanchipuram silk sari is woven in the Kanchipuram region in Tamil Nadu.

Here are some interesting facts about the silk sari that dominated the world of South Indian sarees for years now.

•In a traditional Kanchipuram , the pallu (the hanging end of the saree) is separately woven and then delicately joined to the Saree.

•Simple Kanchipuram sarees can be prepared in about 10 to 12 days. However, decorative ones require up to 20 days of workmanship.

•According to Indian mythology, this silk was considered to be Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu’s favorite fabric.

•Unlike other silk sarees, when you’re wearing a Kanchipuram sari, it requires no safety pins.

•Kanchipuram sari attire was seen on the big screen in the Hollywood movie “Accidental Husband.”

•The COVID-19 impact on the market for Kanchipuram silk resulted in a sharp decline in demand. The bigger problem is to do with a near-washout of the wedding and festive season which was the main reason for the demand for these sarees.
