Moreover, in earlier times, during the lifetime of the great abbot, master, and Dharma king (the “three great ones”), when King Trisong Detsen was constructing the glorious Samye Monastery, the sacred temple that embodies the unchanging perfection of the three traditions, many obstacles arose and the work could not proceed smoothly. At that time, the great master Padmasambhava subdued all the harmful gods, spirits, and demonic forces of Tibet, placing them under oath and entrusting them with the performance of virtuous enlightened activities. Through this, the construction of Samye Monastery was successfully completed.
As an act of thanksgiving for its completion, on the summit of Hepo Ri, offerings of smoke purification (sang) were made to the gods, nāgas, territorial deities, and local protectors who safeguard the virtuous forces of the world. This vast offering ceremony became renowned as the “Universal Sang Offering” (Jambuling Chi-sang).
Likewise, today, on the 15th day of the 5th Tibetan month, in the 2570th year since the passing of the Buddha, the abbots, tulkus, lamas, and students of Ngesang Do-ngak Jangchub Darling Monastery, together with the 8th- and 9th-year students of the monastic college, and the local people of Padma Kod, gathered with the aspiration for the welfare and benefit of the teachings and all sentient beings.
They climbed to the mountain summit above the old village ruins of Old Tuting (Tuting old settlement), where they made extensive sang offerings and golden libation offerings (serkyem) to the Three Roots and the ocean of oath-bound protectors, and also raised prayer flags (lungta).
At the same time, the monastic community at the monastery also recited the extensive Sangsol prayers according to the Nyingthig liturgical tradition.
This is a glimpse of that sacred observance.
