There aren’t too many people on this planet who can claim to have flown combat missions over Korea, been a test pilot on some of the most dangerous experimental aircraft ever developed, and then went on to become an astronaut. Neil Armstrong accomplished much during his 82 years here on earth. But he will be forever remembered for one simple step that took place not here on earth, but on the surface of the moon. Yet to him, it was all in a day’s work, it was his job, nothing more, and nothing less.

If you grew up during the 1960s and became captivated with the space race, then August 25, 2012, was a very sad day for you. It should be a mournful day for all Astronomers, as a true pioneer and my hero has passed on.

On July 16-17, 2019, much of the world experienced one more rare astronomical event — the partial lunar eclipse.

The July partial lunar eclipse was visible to most of Europe and Asia, Africa, South America and Australia. It was missed in North America, except for the very southern and eastern parts of the continent. The partial phase was beginned on 8:01 pm (UTC) on July 16, and the maximum eclipse was occurred during 9:30 pm.
(1:31am (IST) max 2:06am.)

Lunar eclipses occur only on the nights of a full moon, when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon line up and the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow. At maximum eclipse, the full moon will be about half-covered by the Earth's umbral shadow. During the July eclipse, the Moon was with the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer).

This partial eclipse of the Moon was the last lunar eclipse of 2019. In 2020, all lunar eclipses will be penumbral and hard-to-see eclipses. This will be the last time that the Earth’s dark shadow touches the Moon’s surface until the total lunar eclipse on May 26, 2021.

The Eagle Nebula (M16) doesn’t look its usual red in this image. That’s because the photographer shot through Sulfur-II, Hydrogen-alpha, and Oxygen-III filters, and then assigned colors that would bring out details best to each filter. M16 is famous for housing the feature known as the Pillars of Creation.
