بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للبيئة المصادف ٥/٦/٢٠٢٦ نعلن عن تسجيل تاريخي ولاول مره في العراق للنوع المنقرض ابو منجل الناسك أو ابو منجل الاقرع الشمالي Northern Bald Ibis Geronticusf eremita المدرج على القائمة الحمراء للانواع المهددة بخطر الانقراض العالمية IUCN حيث تقدر أعداده في العالم 200-250 طائر فقط.
علما أنه سجل مرتين في العراق عام ١٩١٠ و بداية عام ١٩٢٠ اي قبل أكثر من قرن من الزمن لنعيد تسجيل طائرين انطلقا من تركيا ووصلوا العراق مرورا في المنطقة الغربية ثم المناطق الوسطى و الجنوبية بطريق هجرتهما.
وهنا يجب أن نشير إلى أن العراق له أهمية كبيرة بموقعة الجغرافي للأنواع المهاجرة سنويا وفي الوقت نفسة تواجه هذه الأنواع حصاد كبير بالقتل والأخذ والاتجار ، إن تأمين مسارات الهجرة في العراق أمر بالغ الصعوبة لاسباب كثيرة.
لذا نوجه صوتنا إلى وزارة البيئة العراقية وعلى رأسهم السيدة الوزيرة ونحثهم على الإسراع بإعلان المحميات الوطنية وتطبيق خطط الادارة بشكل حقيقي كونها تضمن استدامة التنوع الاحيائي الذي يمثل ثروة وطنية و تعود بالمنافع الاقتصادية للسكان المحليين، وبالتالي توفير بيئات آمنه للأنواع المهاجرة والمقيمة في العراق.
وفي النهاية أود أن أن أثمن جهود واشكر كل من ساعدنا في البحث عن الطيور اثناء مرورها؛ الزميل الناشط البيئي الاستاذ صميم سلام وفريقه الابطال واتقدم بالشكر إلى الشرطة البيئية لمرافقتهم الفريق، كما اشكر الزميل اختصاصي النباتات الاستاذ بهاء احمد لمرافقته لي اثناء تعقب الطيور.
نعمل حاليا على نشر بحث علمي على مستوى المنطقة مع زملائي في العراق و خبراء مركز الأبحاث في تركيا.
On the occasion of the World Environment Day, June 5, 2026, we announce a historic first record in Iraq of the extinct Northern Bald Ibis geronticus eremita, listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with a global population estimated at only 200-250 adult birds.
This species was previously recorded twice in Iraq, in 1910s and early 1920s, more than a century ago. We are re-recording two birds that migrated from Turkey to Iraq, passing through the western, central, and southern regions.
It is important to note that Iraq's geographical location makes it a crucial transit point for migratory species annually. However, these species face significant losses due to killing, taking, and trafficking. Securing migration routes in Iraq is extremely difficult for numerous reasons.
Therefore, we appeal to the Ministry of Environment, and in particular to the Minister, to expedite the declaration of national reserves and implement effective management plans. This is essential for ensuring the sustainability of biodiversity, a national treasure that generates economic benefits for local communities, and for providing safe environments for both migratory and resident species in Iraq.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who helped us search for the birds during their migration: my colleague, the environmental activist, Mr. Samim Salam, and his heroic team.
I also thank the environmental police for accompanying the team, and my colleague, the botanist, Mr. Bahaa Ahmed, for accompanying me during the bird tracking.
We are currently working on publishing a scientific study for the region with my colleagues in Iraq and experts from the research center in Türkiye.
