"Stars of the Finish Line" by / Podium Photos

We enter the world of athletes whose paths are governed by a different set of unwritten rules—a world where victory is not defined by the scoreboard, but by the pure beating of hearts.
The athletes with intellectual disabilities before us do not move to defeat an opponent; they move to release the love within them. In their honesty and purity, one can trace the footsteps of sport’s true, perpetual winners.

With every step, every glance, and every effort, they remind us of a simple, human truth: sport, above all else, can be an expression of feeling—a space where the pure and sincere emotions surging within them are allowed to blossom.

Here, the allure of sport lies not in the final result, but in the unfiltered passion of these beautiful human beings—those whose presence reminds us that the essence of sport is joy, enthusiasm, and freedom, not medals and not records. And perhaps for this very reason, they are, in the truest sense, the everlasting winners of this arena.

"Amid the Rubble and the Roar" by

Shahre-Qods—once known as Qaleh Hassan Khan and remembered as a fertile plain—has in recent years, due to the renovation of Azadi Stadium and the deterioration of Takhti Stadium, unexpectedly become the home venue for Esteghlal and Persepolis. This shift has turned an industrial, migrant-populated city into a temporary center of Iranian sports. Yet Shahre-Qods Stadium struggles with limited capacity, poor access routes, insufficient facilities, and even the risk of collapsing stands. The area surrounding the stadium is marked by scrap warehouses, vacant lots filled with construction debris, and narrow alleyways. On its southern side lies a cemetery pressed directly against the stadium wall, where on match days, the sound of funeral chants blends strangely with the roar of football fans, creating an uncanny and surreal atmosphere.

Nazila
Sudden changes in life always come with difficulties. Sometimes these changes not only alter a person’s path but also challenge their very sense of identity. Nazila Sharifi, a 39-year-old woman, experienced such a turning point at the age of 28. On her last day as a student, while returning to her dorm on a rainy night with her boyfriend, she was involved in a car accident. The crash caused a spinal cord injury that permanently affected her mobility. After the accident, her boyfriend left her, but her family—especially her sister Neda—stood by her side and supported her as she rebuilt her life.

Nazila decided to take up rowing, a sport that not only brought her back to physical activity but also became a way to redefine her personal identity. Through ten years of continuous training, she became one of the best female para-kayakers in Iran. However, her professional path has faced serious obstacles: lack of financial resources, long distance from sports facilities, and structural limitations that have restricted her opportunities for growth.

Despite achieving first place in her specialized class, Nazila has never been invited to the national team’s training camps—possibly due to issues such as insufficient hijab observance or lack of special connections within the federation. This exclusion has not only prevented her from competing internationally but has also placed pressure on her motivation.

Nazila’s story shows that discrimination in sports—especially against women and people with disabilities—still exists, not in obvious forms, but in the shape of opportunities that are never given.

RED Identity by / Guest section.

Tractor Club of Tabriz, founded in 1970, is more than just a football team—it is a symbol of identity and unity for the Turks of Iran. It is recognized as the most popular club in Iran and one of the most well-attended teams in Asia. The passionate fans, known as “Tiraxtur fans” or “Titis,” fill Yadegar-e Emam Stadium and travel in large numbers even for away matches. Much like Liverpool and Barcelona, Tractor has become a social symbol and the voice of the Turks of Iran. Its supporters not only stand for football but also for social justice, and during the club’s historic championship after 55 years, they set records with unforgettable chants. Today, Tractor embodies the love, hope, and identity of people who see football as a means of unity and joy.

Thoughts of Flight
2021

In 2013, Saeed Ramin, an Iranian professional traceur, landed on a mat during an illegal competition, resulting in a spinal cord injury to his neck. The severity of the injury left him with limited mobility, only able to blink. According to his doctors, it was believed that he would be unable to sit in a wheelchair. However, through dedicated rehabilitation and unwavering confidence, Saeed defied expectations and regained some of his abilities, now residing in a wheelchair.

Just one year after the incident, Saeed crossed paths with Maedeh, one of his interns, and their relationship blossomed over time. After six years, they celebrated their marriage, united in their belief that Saeed will one day rise from his wheelchair.

The sport of parkour gained popularity in Iran following the appearance of two Iranian traceurs in the documentary “Jump London.” In 2003. However, in 2010, parkour was declared illegal in Iran due to its perceived high-risk nature. Despite the remarkable performances of Iranian traceurs at the World Championships in Turkey, the sport lacks the necessary administration in Iran to prevent irrecoverable damages and injuries through proper support and professional training.

2020

In response to the Corona virus outbreak on March 15th, 2020, the Iranian government announced the immediate closure of all athletic venues, sports clubs, tournaments, and sports training centres across the country. This necessary measure remained in effect until further notice.

In the face of these restrictions, Iranian athletes found a unique solution to maintain their physical and mental fitness. They embraced rooftop training, utilizing the open spaces atop their homes. By taking to the rooftops, these dedicated athletes strove to keep their skills sharp and their spirits high during those challenging times.

After 40 years
2018

Despite sports progress, women in Iran are still prohibited from entering football stadiums. However, a significant milestone was achieved during the 2018 FIFA World Cup when, after 40 years, they were finally granted access to Azadi Stadium in Tehran to experience live football matches.

On March 1st, during a meeting between Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and Hassan Rouhani, the former president of Iran, the lifting of the ban on women’s presence in stadiums was discussed. Subsequently, selective permits were issued, allowing women to enter sports venues.

The long-awaited opening of the doors at Azadi Stadium coincided with the excitement of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Families were now able to come together and enjoy the thrill of watching the Iranian national team compete.

In Iran, children are drawn to wrestling from a young age with the dream of becoming future champions. However, behind the strength and achievements lies a more complex story: the mental and physical struggles of these athletes. Each competition is not only a test of physical endurance but also a mental challenge, filled with the fear of failure and the thrill of victory. Parents and coaches, too, experience stress and worry alongside the children as they navigate the difficult path of acceptance and growth. These athletes experience resilience, courage, and determination as they face the challenges of the sport.
