Tsubo-yu, the oldest onsen in all of Japan. It is found in the tiny mountain village of Yunomine Onsen. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only site where you can have a full body hot spring bath! We stayed in Yunomine Onsen for one night and were able to have our 30 minutes in this incredible piece of history!

Our last night on the Kumano Kodo is in the mountain town of Nachisan, where the Seiganto-ji Temple Sanjuno-to 3-Storied Pagoda is. It’s one of the most photogenic pagodas in all of Japan. For very good reason.

Here are a few pictures of some of the wildlife we’ve seen. The first bird was EXTREMELY hard to get a shot off. But that species has been serenading us through the first two days (and ~17km so far!) and has a very lovely song!

Fushimi Imari and the Senbon Torii - “Thousands of torii gates” - is an important Shinto Shrine here in Kyoto. Thanks to our amazing host - we were given the “back way” into the shrine. It was an amazing walk through the edge of town (up against the mountain) with little valleys and other shrines scattered along the path.

Going in the back way we avoided the crowded main entrance and only on the way out did we have to brave the thousands of people!

The senbon torii were much more magical!

The Yasaka Pagoda has a much different vibe at night. Fewer people and a quiet the darkness brings.

This was my office today. I attempted to forge my own kitchen knife (although it could have been a Samurai sword….) by beating an iron and steel ingot into shape! For never having forged anything before and only having 2 hours to do it, it’s straight and sharp enough to cut some things!

Thanks to .kyoto for a great afternoon! Make sure to check out my Story for a video clip from the day!

We arrived in Kyoto just in time to catch the end of the Sakura blossoms… unfortunately still didn’t miss most of the people but that’s ok. Our first day in Japan was a pretty spectacular one! Over 13k walked and some of Kyoto’s iconic scenery seen. 12 more days in Japan to go!
