Some Puffin shenanigans yesterday, soon they will unfortunately leave the island again. the weather was stormy and it seems that the Puffins enjoy it for gliding around. Watching them fumble around in the sky is always much fun.

Harlequin Ducks

Small, boldly patterned diving ducks known as “sea mice” or “squeakers” for their high-pitched calls. They spend summers breeding in pounding, whitewater mountain streams and winters congregating along rocky, windswept coastlines.

Striking Plumage: Breeding males are visually unmistakable, featuring a blue-gray body marked with bold white and chestnut stripes. Females are drab grayish-brown with distinct white patches on their faces

Extreme Habitat: They endure severe conditions in fast-moving, icy waters. Their plumage is exceptionally dense, trapping air for high buoyancy and critical insulation

Tough Survivors: Because of their constant proximity to jagged rocks in violent surf, most adult Harlequin Ducks live with a lifetime’s accumulation of healed fractures

European Distribution: In Europe, Iceland is the only place these birds nest. They are found across northern rivers in the spring and move to rocky coastal waters during the winter.

Gígjökull.

On the way towards Þórsmörk you will pass this large flow glacier on the northern side of the famous Eyjafjallajökull. Gígjökull is one of Two flow streams off the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.
Gígjökull went through some hefty changes during the 2010 eruption as a lot of the ice melted resulting in flash floods that ran to the nearby Markarfljót river. Along with that a 3 km stream (1.8 mile) of lava flowed underneath the glacier.

The glacier is also known for its unique and amazing landscape that was created during the eruption.

Dynjandi:
The Jewel of the Icelandic Westfjords.

Located in Arnarfjörður in a bay called Dynjandavogur you will find the most amazing waterfall you will find in the Westfjords and probably one of the more beautiful ones in Iceland.
How big is Dynjandi? Roughly 100 meters (328 feet) in cascading hight
And 30 meters (98 feet) across at the top, 60 meters (197 feet) at the bottom.

The main waterfall and also the largest one of the bunch is at the Top. But the following list is the names of all 7 waterfalls that you pass on the climb (15-20 min depending on waking speed and how may times you stop for photos) to get to Dynjandi. The list goes by the first waterfall by the parking lot up towards Dynjandi at the top.

Bæjarfoss (Sjóarfoss)
Hundafoss
Kvíslarfoss
Hrísvaðsfoss
Göngumannafoss
Strompgljúfrafoss (Strompur)
Hæstahjallafoss
Dynjandi

Dynjandi is preserved as a natural protected monument (since 1981). We are asked to stay on the paths to protect nature and prevent this beautiful place from being trampled.

If you want to visit this amazing waterfall in the summer my recommendation to you would be to go early in the morning or a bit later in the evening to escape the crowds that form there.

In a quiet fjord named Fossfjörður in the Icelandic Westfjords sits The iconic A-framed farmhouse.
It has been abandoned now for a long time and has become somewhat of an sensation for travelers and photographers.
