Day 1 – Snæfellsnes Peninsula: A Perfect Start to Our Ring Road Adventure
Our Ring Road adventure began on the spectacular Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” because it showcases so many of the country’s landscapes in one region.
Our first stop was at the striking red volcanic rocks, their rich color created by iron oxidation following ancient volcanic eruptions. It was a dramatic introduction to Iceland’s unique geology.
Next, we visited Ytri Tunga, one of Iceland’s best places to see seals. Sure enough, we spotted several resting on the rocks just offshore.
From there, we continued to the iconic Búðakirkja, the famous black church. One of only a handful of black churches in Iceland, it stands beautifully against the surrounding lava fields and open landscape.
Before continuing, we stopped at Hótel Búðir for a relaxing coffee break, enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Refreshed, we drove to Arnarstapi and took a short walk along the rugged coastline. The cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and seabirds nesting along the mountainside overlooking the ocean made it one of the day’s highlights.
We then continued around the peninsula, stopping at Lóndrangar, where towering volcanic sea stacks rise dramatically from the coastline.
Our final sightseeing stop was the legendary Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains. Nearby, we admired the picturesque Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, with the mountain providing the perfect backdrop.
The day wasn’t without a little adventure. While driving along a gravel road toward our accommodation, we got a flat tire—the first one in nine years of driving! Fortunately, we managed to reach a nearby farm, where we quickly changed the tire in about half an hour before continuing our journey.
As we finally arrived at our beautiful accommodation, we were welcomed by a gorgeous Icelandic sunset. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable first day: cozy surroundings, incredible scenery, and a memorable story that had already become part of our Ring Road adventure.
