The lights are back! ✨

I was coming back from a private tour a couple of days ago when I saw the northern lights properly for the first time this season.

We can actually start seeing them here in Iceland from around the middle of August, if conditions are favorable, but September usually is when the aurora season really starts kicking into high gear. The nights are getting noticeably darker, and around the autumn equinox there is also a tendency for increased geomagnetic activity due to the way
Earth’s magnetic field interacts with the solar wind.

And for my fellow science nerds — this actually has a name: the Russell–McPherron effect. Which might sound kinda made up, but apparently my autumn aurora excitement does have science on its side.

While the northern lights season here generally runs from around September through April, I’ve always found September to November to be some of my favorite months for seeing them. There can be plenty of activity, the nights are properly dark again, and importantly, it’s usually nowhere near as brutal and unforgiving as in January or February.

The video in this carousel is from a couple of nights ago, while the other shots are a few nuggets from the archive from previous years.

Enjoy!

The one project that I’m always excited about and super proud of - Iceland collection of chocolates that I create together with Circolo .

It’s a perfect piece of Iceland, that you can take home with you to enjoy and relive those adventure vibes 😜
I won’t blame you, though, if you munch on a few bars while you’re here 😜
Each chocolate features unique flavor and toppings and comes with a postcard print of one of my photographs.

I often wonder which flavor you liked most, so drop a 💬 down here if you’ve tasted any of the chocolates!

You can grab these at stores and hotels around Iceland and at the airport.

Iceland's extreme weather means there are few old buildings and none of them are as grand as the castles and forts you see across Europe. But our old buildings have their own charm and wildness 🤩

September is a big deal for Icelandic Sheep - their summer vacation comes to an end and soon they'll be gathered together, sorted, and sent back home before harsh winter weather comes. If you're visiting in the next few weeks, please be extra careful and cautious of sheep and farmers in the road. 🐑🐑🐑
