Levadas are traditional irrigation channels found on the island of Madeira, Portugal. They were built starting in the 16th century to transport water from the rainy northern parts of the island to the drier southern regions, where most agriculture took place.

These narrow canals run for more than 2,000 kilometers across the island and often pass through mountains, forests, tunnels, and cliffs.

The system was constructed by hand and is considered an impressive example of historical engineering.
