Un’auto con qualche anno sulle spalle non resta in piedi da sola.
Si consuma, si rovina, va rimessa a posto ogni volta che serve. Non è un gesto che fai una volta e basta.
Una storia d’amore chiede la stessa cosa. Non basta che sia nata bene. Va aggiornata, portata avanti, tenuta viva anche quando sembra già a posto.
La cura è una scelta che si prende di nuovo ogni volta che serve.

Con certe persone stai bene prima ancora di sapere perché.
Non stai calcolando la battuta giusta. Non stai scegliendo il momento per cercare quella mano. Succede e basta.
Non serve la macchina fotografica, non serve l’occasione. Quella naturalezza non si costruisce, non si prepara prima.
È il sollievo di stare con qualcuno senza dover recitare niente.

C’è una tenerezza che a volte mettiamo da parte.
Non per mancanza, ma per fare spazio a tutto il resto, che a volte è così ingombrante da diventare rumore di fondo. Per questo serve il silenzio, serve il tempo giusto, senza nient’altro intorno.
Poi arriva un giorno che quel silenzio lo crea davvero. E quella tenerezza trova lo spazio che di solito le viene tolto.
Non è la macchina fotografica a inventarla. È solo il silenzio che di solito non ha.

Perdersi davanti alla macchina fotografica è raro, e prende forme diverse.
C’è chi resta un po’ presente anche nei momenti più intimi, e chi sparisce del tutto, senza più vedere nient’altro.
Un sorriso che resta anche per l’obiettivo. Uno sguardo che lo dimentica del tutto.
Due modi di amare, nello stesso istante.

Losing yourself in front of a camera is rare, and it happens in different ways.
Some stay a little present, even in the most private moments. Others let go completely, and stop seeing anything else.
One smile still finds the lens. One gaze forgets it’s even there.
Two ways of loving, in the same instant.

C’è un tempo che non ti chiede di rincorrerlo.
Un cortile che si apre nel successivo, la stessa luce che ti segue da uno spazio all’altro, l’ombra che cambia forma piano, senza fretta di cambiare scena.
Quando la giornata non si spezza in tappe da inseguire, resta qualcosa che capita raramente: il tempo di stare dentro ogni passaggio, invece di correre verso il prossimo.
Cambia anche il modo di guardarsi, dentro un tempo così. Non lo sguardo preso al volo tra un momento e il successivo.
Sentirsi arrivati, non più di passaggio verso qualcos’altro.

There’s a kind of time that never asks you to chase it.
One courtyard opens into the next, the same light following you from space to space, shadows shifting slowly, in no rush to change the scene.
When a day doesn’t break into stops to catch up on, something rare is left standing: time to actually be inside each moment, instead of running toward the next one.
The way you look at each other changes too, inside time like this. Not the glance grabbed in passing between one moment and another.
Arriving, finally. Not just passing through toward something else.

Ci sono scelte che fai senza che nessuno ti veda farle.
Lasciare una vita per entrare in un’altra. Imparare a chiamare casa posti diversi, ogni volta che serve. Restare, quando sarebbe più semplice non farlo.
Nessuno ti guarda mentre succede. Nessuno ti applaude.
Poi arriva un giorno in cui è il contrario.
Entri in chiesa e trovi una fila di uniformi schierate per te, la stessa divisa che per anni vi ha tenuti lontani ora è lì a farvi da cornice, dentro e fuori la porta.

Some choices you make with no one watching.
Leaving one life to walk into another. Learning to call different places home, whenever it’s needed. Staying, when it would be easier not to.
No one sees it happen. No one claps.
Then one day it’s the opposite.
You walk into a church and find a line of uniforms standing for you, the same uniform that kept you apart for years, now framing the door, inside and out.

C’è un momento in cui smetti di preoccuparti di come stai.
Non arriva da solo. Qualcuno deve dirti di lasciart andare.
E tu lo fai, perché finalmente hai il permesso.
Per qualche secondo non c’è più niente da controllare.
E ti ritrovi con la bocca aperta verso il cielo.
È strano che succeda proprio lì. Eppure è lì che succede.

There comes a moment when you stop worrying about how you’re doing.
It doesn’t happen on its own. Someone has to tell you to let go.
And you do, because at last, you feel allowed to.
For a few seconds, there’s nothing left to control.
And you find yourself with your mouth open to the sky.
It’s strange that it should happen right there. And yet, that’s exactly where it does.

Certaines choses, tu les comprends avant qu’elles arrivent.
Il n’y a encore rien à voir. Et pourtant, tu le sens déjà.
C’est comme ça avec les gens qu’on aime. Tu n’attends pas que le moment soit terminé pour savoir qu’il compte. Tu le reconnais pendant qu’il est encore là, encore ouvert.
Tu riais avec quelqu’un, tu pensais à autre chose, tu étais ailleurs.
Tu n’attendais rien. C’est arrivé et tu ne saurais même pas l’expliquer. Peut-être que tu étais simplement toi.

Certe cose le capisci prima che succedano.
Non c’è ancora niente da vedere. Eppure lo senti già.
È così con le persone che ami. Non aspetti che il momento sia finito per capire che conta. Lo riconosci mentre è ancora lì, ancora aperto.
Stavi ridendo con qualcuno, pensavi ad altro, eri altrove.
Non stavi aspettando niente. È successo e non sai nemmeno spiegarlo. Forse eri semplicemente tu.

Some things you understand before they happen.
There’s nothing to see yet. And yet you feel it already.
That’s how it is with the people you love. You don’t wait for the moment to be over to know it matters. You recognise it while it’s still there, still open.
You were laughing with someone, thinking about something else, somewhere else entirely.
You weren’t waiting for anything. It happened and you can’t even explain why. Maybe you were just yourself.
