Seeing Gösta Berlings saga (1924) and Entr’acte (1924) live, on the big screen in the beautiful Arkadenhof of the University of Bonn, accompanied by live music by Daan van den Hurk, Maud Nelissen and Neil Brand, was truly unforgettable. There is something incredibly powerful about experiencing silent cinema this way — seeing these images come alive again, almost a century later, in the presence of an audience.
The Internationale Bonner Stummfilmtage have been doing an extraordinary job of keeping silent cinema alive and bringing it to new generations. Gösta Berlings saga (1924) und Entr’acte (1924) live auf der großen Leinwand im wunderschönen Arkadenhof der Universität Bonn zu erleben, begleitet von der Live-Musik von Daan van den Hurk, Maud Nelissen und Neil Brand, war für mich eine unvergessliche Erfahrung. Es ist etwas ganz Besonderes, Stummfilme auf diese Weise zu erleben – wenn die Bilder, fast ein Jahrhundert später, vor einem Publikum wieder zum Leben erwachen.
Die Internationalen Bonner Stummfilmtage leisten seit vielen Jahren eine großartige Arbeit, um das Stummfilmkino lebendig zu halten und neuen Generationen näherzubringen. ✨ Un personaggio che, come scrive Farran Smith Nehme, sembra “portare la festa con sé” e questa fotografia, che quasi cent’anni dopo conserva intatta tutta la sua energia, è una di quelle rare immagini capaci di raccontare un film (e forse un festival) prima ancora che inizi.

“Sadie Thompson”, diretto da Raoul Walsh nel 1928, e recentemente restaurato da Milestone Films, è tra le proiezioni serali più attese di questa edizione.

✨ Embodying a character who seems to “bring the party with her,” says Farran Smith Nehme, Swanson is seen here in one of those rare images that can communicate a film’s aura (and maybe even a film festival) before it’s begun.

IL CINEMA RITROVATO 2026 – PART 12 – THE GRAND CHAPLIN FINALE
The grand finale of this photographic journey through Il Cinema Ritrovato XL/2026 could only belong to one name: Charlie Chaplin.

After twelve parts dedicated to discoveries, restorations, forgotten treasures and unforgettable moments from the festival, this final chapter celebrates one of the greatest artists in the history of cinema with A Dog’s Life (1918) and Shoulder Arms (1918), two masterpieces featuring the unforgettable Little Tramp. Presented in their original 1918 versions, before the later re-editing made by Chaplin for The Chaplin Revue (1959), the films return to audiences thanks to a remarkable 4K restoration by MoMA in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna, under the aegis of Association Chaplin and Roy Export S.A.S. The restoration reconstructed the original versions as faithfully as possible, bringing back a form of the films unseen for nearly a century, recovering first-choice takes, original intertitles and the authentic rhythm intended by Chaplin.

Introduced by Dave Kehr (MoMA) and Arnold Lozano (Association Chaplin / Roy Export), the Piazza Maggiore screening featured the original music composed by Charles Chaplin, adapted and directed by Timothy Brock, performed live by Orchestra Senzaspine.

A perfect ending to a journey through more than a century of cinema: from the earliest moving images to Chaplin’s timeless masterpieces, every restored frame represents a dialogue between memory, preservation and the audiences of today.

I know very well that this kind of work does not always receive the attention it deserves from social media algorithms. After twelve parts dedicated to Il Cinema Ritrovato 2026, documenting restorations, archives, musicians, filmmakers and the people who keep cinema history alive, I would like to thank everyone who followed this journey.

During these weeks, while sharing my photographs, I have also received attacks and attempts to discourage this work. However, they have in part reinforced my belief that documenting and sharing culture, cinema history and memory remains important.

IL CINEMA RITROVATO 2026 – PART 11

As we approach the end of this photographic journey through Il Cinema Ritrovato 2026, the afternoon of 26 June continues with two remarkable screenings, once again highlighting the festival’s unique dialogue between restoration, memory and live cinema.

The first event is Beyond Zero: 1914-1918 (2014), directed by Bill Morrison, a powerful visual meditation on the First World War created from original archival footage filmed during the conflict. Introduced by Bill Morrison and Aleksandra Vrebalov, the film features an original score composed by Aleksandra Vrebalov and performed by the Kronos Quartet, transforming fragile images from the past into a profound reflection on memory and history.

The programme continues with The Gorilla (1927), directed by Alfred Santell, a rare silent film combining mystery, comedy and horror elements. Restored in 2024 by Cineteca Milano at from a tinted nitrate print, the screening was introduced by Matteo Pavesi (Cineteca Italiana) and accompanied live by La sindrome dell’aceto: Davide Badini (guitar, electronics) and Alessandro De Lorenzi (guitar, electronics).

IL CINEMA RITROVATO 2026 – PART 10

The evening of 26 June begins with Po Zakonu (1926), directed by Lev Kuleshov, one of the masterpieces of Soviet silent cinema and a remarkable example of cinematic construction starring Aleksandra Khokhlova and Sergey Komarov. Based on Jack London’s The Unexpected, the film transforms a story of isolation, tension and moral conflict into a powerful exploration of space, editing and human psychology. Introduced by Oliver Hanley and Alessandro Criscitiello, the screening was presented with carbon-arc projection operated by Daniela Bongiorno, with a live musical performance by Paolo Spaccamonti (electric guitar, mandocaster), Ramon Moro (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Andrea Cauduro (baritone guitar, banjo, electronics).

The following event at DAMSLab was dedicated to Case Study: Restoring the Negative A of Chaplin’s Shoulder Arms (1918) and A Dog’s Life (1918), focusing on the complex restoration work behind two of Charlie Chaplin’s most important 1918 films. Timothy Brock, Arnold Lozano and Dave Kehr (MoMA The Museum of Modern Art), presented the research, archival discoveries and preservation strategies behind these remarkable restoration projects.
