🇬🇧 The little church among the cypresses (2015)

I took this image in December 2015.

It was supposed to be a color photograph, but I arrived too late at this location, and the fields were now all in the shade.

The scene was fantastic, though.

The grazing light of the sunset, combined with a light mist, projected the shadows of the cypress trees and the small church on the hill below.

And black and white photography very often becomes beautiful precisely when the contrasts between light and shadow are very accentuated.

And I think this is one of those cases ;)

🇬🇧 Furious waves in Ciaran Storm. (2023)

On November 3, 2023, one of the most violent wind storms of the last 100 years broke out on the coasts of Tuscany.

Winds that reached 120 km/h and caused damage to all the coasts of the Ligurian Sea and the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea.

I know that such powerful meteorological events are not comparable to those of the Oceans, but for the Mediterranean Sea, it was a very violent and rare phenomenon.

This image was captured from the coast of my city, Cecina. It wasn't easy to reach the beach.

Fallen trees blocked many roads, so I preferred to reach the sea from a treeless country road with my mountain bike.

Once I reached the beach, I had severe difficulty staying upright.

Waves, foam, and sand invaded the seafront road.

I had to shoot freehand because the tripod wouldn't stand upright, and I had to clean the lens every 10 seconds.

I am 50 years old, and I don't remember similar violence.

🇬🇧 The iconic cypresses of the Val d'Orcia. Study II (2015)

It is probably the most photographed landscape in Tuscany.

There are thousands of interpretations of this magical place. In my idea of photography, I am always looking for images that reflect my way of communicating a thought, of signifying my gaze on the world. In the finite space of the frame,

I like to represent reality by eliminating what is superfluous and what distances us from the nature of things.

That day in December 2015, in the countryside near San Quirico d'Orcia, there were not too many visual obstacles. There were only the contrasts of light and shadows of a cloudy day, which enhanced the essence of this extraordinary landscape. I chose a long exposure to avoid distractions with the clouds to make the sky more uniform, dark at the top, and light on the horizon.

This is "Study II" of the cypress trees of the Val d'Orcia. Scrolling down my profile, you will find "Studio I", with a different composition, closer to the cypresses.

The Val d'Orcia is not just splendid sunrises at Podere Belvedere or starry nights under the cypress trees of San Quirico.

Even for those who love minimalism and black and white, it is always a source of inspiration.

Anche per chi ama il minimalismo ed il bianco e nero, queste terre magiche sono sempre fonte di ispirazione.

🇬🇧 Layers (2020)

I took this image on a December morning on the hills around Volterra.

I went to take a commissioned photographic job in the area, and while I was getting into the car on the road that leads to Volterra, I saw this spectacular scene towards the Val di Cecina.

I stopped the car, walked a few hundred meters to find the right shot, and as soon as I set up the tripod, I said to myself: "This goes straight into my black-and-white gallery!"

And here it is! I hope you enjoy it!

Volterra | Toscana

Ho scattato questa immagine in un mattino di Dicembre sulle colline intorno a Volterra.

Ero andato per scattare un lavoro fotografico su commissione in zona, e mentre salivo in auto per la strada che conduce a Volterra ho visto questa spettacolare scena verso la Val di Cecina.

Ho fermato l'auto, ho percorso qualche centinaio di metri a piedi per trovare la giusta inquadratura, e appena piazzato il cavalletto mi sono detto: "Questa va diritta nella mia galleria in bianco e nero!"

Ed eccola qua! Spero che vi piaccia!

🇬🇧 Frozen Morning in Val d'Orcia (2020)

I took this photograph on a frozen morning in the Val d'Orcia.

It's a very famous photographic location, the cypresses of Poggio Covili, but on this occasion, I was able to capture an original moment, thanks to the textures of the recently sown crops and the strong contrast between the ground and the small plants due to the morning frost.

Ho scattato questa fotografia in un mattino di gelo in Val d'Orcia.

E' una location fotografica molto famosa, i cipressi di Poggio Covili, ma in questa occasione ho potuto catturare un momento originale, grazie alle texture delle colture appena seminate e al forte contrasto tra il terreno e le piccole piante dovuto alla gelo mattutino.

🇬🇧 Terrace IX (2013)

This is my ninth photograph of the Terraces series. It's a 2013 photograph taken in Yport, Normandy.

The shot was taken at twilight on a cloudy day with the overcast sun against it. In particular, the nocturnal effect is unreal.

The nocturnal effect is amplified using one or more neutral-density graduated filters on the sky or, sometimes, with the help of a black card in front of the lens for some seconds above the horizon line.

Questa è la mia nona fotografia della serie Terrazze. È una fotografia del 2013 scattata a Yport, in Normandia.

La foto è stata scattata al crepuscolo in una giornata nuvolosa con il sole coperto in controluce. In particolare, l'effetto notturno è irreale.

L'effetto notturno viene amplificato utilizzando uno o più filtri graduati a densità neutra applicati in fase di scatto sulla parte del cielo o, talvolta, con l'ausilio di un cartoncino nero posto davanti all'obiettivo per alcuni secondi sopra la linea dell'orizzonte.

🇬🇧 Eleven Trees (2021)

This group of trees is located near Buonconvento in the Crete Senesi area in Tuscany.

I knew this area because I'm a cycling enthusiast, and every year I see the professional race of the Strade Bianche, and this group of trees is right along a gravel sector that runs through the race.

I took it on a spring morning in 2021. The forecasts were for abundant mists in the interior of Tuscany, and I left early in the morning to reach the province of Siena.

After quite a bit of waiting, this group of eleven trees finally emerged from the mists, and I was able to take this very minimalistic photograph.

🇮🇹 Undici Alberi (2021) - Buonconvento | Toscana

Questo gruppo di alberi si trova vicino a Buonconvento nel territorio delle Crete Senesi, in Toscana.

Conoscevo questa zona perché sono un appassionato di ciclismo e ogni anno vado a vedere la corsa professionsitica delle Strade Bianche e questo gruppo di alberi è proprio lungo un settore di sterrato che percorre la corsa.

L'ho scattata in una mattina di primavera del 2021. Le previsioni mettevano nebbie abbondanti nell'interno della Toscana e sono partito di buon mattino per raggiungere la provincia di Siena.

Dopo un bel po' di attesa è finalmente spuntato dalle nebbie questo gruppo di undici alberi e sono riuscito a scattare questa fotografia molto minimalista.

🇬🇧 The Holm Oak of Pieve a Salti (2023) 🌳

This beautiful holm oak dominates a hill in the Val d'Orcia near Buonconvento in Tuscany.

It is a secular tree near Pieve a Salti farm, estimated to be around 120 years old, and can be seen from miles away.

I shot this scene of strong contrasts on May 2023, a stormy month like it hasn't happened for many years.

Since it wasn't very windy, I opted for a long exposure that was short enough to blur the clouds slightly.

🇮🇹 Il Leccio di Pieve a Salti (2023) 🌳 - Buonconvento | Toscana

Questo bellissimo leccio domina una collina della Val d'orcia vicino a Buonconvento in Toscana.

E' un albero secolare, si stima abbia circa 120 anni e può essere visto da chilometri di distanza.

Ho ripreso questa scena dai forti contrasti in un giorno di maggio 2023, un mese molto piovoso come non succedeva da molti anni.

Visto che il vento era assente, ho optato per una posa lunga inferiore al minuto per sfumare leggermente le nuvole.

🇬🇧 Shirahige Shrine Torii Study I (2010)

Takashima | Shiga prefecture | Japan

Shirahige Torii is a beautiful "floating" torii located a few meters off Lake Biwa (Biwa-ko), the largest lake in Japan.

I took this image with a long exposure of about 80 seconds at 5.30 pm on May 30, 2010, just before sunset, with the sun to the right of the frame.

The weather was excellent, the sky clear, and only a few residual clouds on the horizon.

A light wind was blowing from the north, and on the horizon, Oki Island (slightly to the left of the torii in the photograph) was shrouded in a light mist.

These were the conditions I hoped to find because, from this location, I was looking for an ethereal, pure, very spiritual image that would convey the emotion and magic of the shrine and its history.

🇮🇹 Shirahige Shrine Torii Studio I (2010)

Shirahige Torii è un bellissimo torii "galleggiante" situato pochi metri a largo del lago Biwa (Biwa-ko), il lago più grande del Giappone.

Ho scattato questa immagine con una posa lunga di circa 80 secondi alle 17.30 del 30 maggio 2010, poco prima del tramonto, con il sole a destra dell’inquadratura.

Il clima era eccellente, il cielo sereno e solo qualche nube residua all’orizzonte. Soffiava un vento leggero da nord e all’orizzonte l’isola di Oki (leggermente sulla sinistra del torii nella fotografia) era avvolta in una leggera foschia.

Erano le condizioni che speravo di trovare, perché da questa location cercavo un’immagine eterea, pura, molto spirituale, che trasmettesse l'emozione e la magia del santuario e della sua storia.

🇬🇧 We are not all the same (2023)

A row of trees in the fog in Tuscany.

We are used to seeing rows of cypress trees in Tuscany in a certain way: perfect, well aligned, all of the same height... but this is not always the case.

As in life, we are not all the same, and this photo from a foggy morning in Tuscany celebrates the differences.

We are all unique and special in our own way.

We may look similar and have similar interests, but each person has a different perspective, set of values, and story behind them.

We have talents and strengths that set us apart.

Wanting to be like others devalues identity. Differences strengthen personalities and make each of us so interesting

🇮🇹 Non siamo tutti uguali (2023) - Santa Luce | Toscana

Una fila di alberi nella nebbia in Toscana.

Siamo abituati a vedere i filari di cipressi in Toscana in un certo modo: perfetti, ben allineati, tutti della stessa altezza... ma non sempre è così.

Come nella vita, non siamo tutti uguali, e questa foto di un mattino nebbioso in Toscana celebra le differenze.

Siamo tutti unici e speciali a modo nostro.

Potremmo sembrare simili e avere interessi analoghi, ma ogni persona ha alle spalle una prospettiva, un insieme di valori e una storia diversa.

Abbiamo talenti e punti di forza che ci distinguono.

L'omologazione svaluta l'identità, le differenze rafforzano le personalità e rendono ognuno di noi così interesante.
