Every year, 19 to 23 million tonnes of plastic enter aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, lakes and oceans. Scientists estimate that between 75 and 199 million tonnes of plastic are already present in the world's oceans.
Over time, ocean currents have concentrated plastic debris into vast accumulation zones.
These are not solid islands of waste, but huge areas where floating debris and microplastics are found in much higher concentrations.
One example is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which covers an estimated 1.6 million km² — almost twice the size of Texas.
A plastic underwater housing can contain several kilograms of material, depending on the model and configuration. Today, around 98% of virgin plastic is still produced from fossil resources, with additional energy required for manufacturing, machining, assembly and transport.
The environmental impact begins long before the product reaches the water.
Camera technology evolves quickly. Many photographers upgrade their camera bodies several times during their careers, even when the previous one is still fully functional.
When a dedicated housing only fits one camera model, changing your camera can also mean replacing your housing.
For example, if a housing weighs around 2.5 kg, replacing it three times means using around 7.5 kg of material. If those housings cannot be adapted, repaired or reused, they may eventually become waste.
