TerraProject

TerraProject Italian collective of documentary photographers founded in Florence in 2006.

TerraProject Photographers is a collective of documentary photographers founded in Italy in 2006. Its members are Michele Borzoni, Simone Donati, Pietro Paolini and Rocco Rorandelli. Among the first photographic collective born in Italy, since its onset TerraProject has represented not only a common promotional platform for its members, but also a creative tool to experiment with an original “coll

ective writing” approach, with the creation of group reportage characterized by a carefully refined stylistic uniformity. With an eye on both the Italian reality and the most relevant global issues, the members of TerraProject have produced numerous individual and collective essays, utilizing both the classic photographic medium and the multimedia approach. The works of the collective have been published in the pages of the most important international magazines, including Der Spiegel, Financial Times Magazine, GEO (Germany and France), Le Monde Magazine, Monocle, Newsweek and Newsweek Japan, Paris Match, Stern, Time, The Wall Street Journal and in Italy on D La Repubblica, Geo, IL, Internazionale, Io Donna, L'Espresso, Sette, Sportweek and Vanity Fair. Many of their reportage have been exhibited in New York, Beijing, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Madrid, Barcelona, Dublin and in many Italian cities, and the collective's members have been guests of numerous international photo festivals. TerraProject photographers have received many prestigious international awards including the World Press Photo (2010 and 2012), the Canon Prize (2010) and the Pesaresi prize (2013).

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the earthquake in Central Italy, which our collective documented from day one and for the next five years. Between the end of 2025 and the beginning of this year, we returned to the region between Lazio and Marche to recount its places and communities, with two distinct projects. One, for the Varrone Foundation, focused on the local youth who decided to remain in the crater area despite the difficulties and the slow return to life. The other, for ActionAid Italia, focused on the services the organization provides to residents, highlighting in particular the work of volunteers who contribute to supporting the daily lives of those who live there.
On Friday, May 8th, we will be in Rieti at a public meeting organized by the Varrone Foundation, where a volume dedicated to the anniversary will be presented, with an essay by Mario Calabresi.

Our latest project “Dayton’s legacy”, that we produced in Bosnia last year will be on display in CAGLIARI at MUACC with a public talk by Rocco Rorandelli TOMORROW, March 5th at 6pm. This new project continues TerraProject’s long-term investigation into forms of directed democracy: those political systems shaped and sustained by external powers, where sovereignty often remains partial and unresolved. Following the collective’s previous work in Kosovo, this project turns its attention to Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country whose constitutional framework and political identity were not the result of an internal reconciliation, but of an international agreement imposed to end a war.

The work observes how external governance shapes daily life, identity, and expectation, while internal divisions continue to pull the country in opposing directions: between the Eurocentric aspirations of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the political and cultural attraction toward Serbia and Russia within Republika Srpska, driven by the increasingly authoritarian and destabilising leadership of Milorad Dodik.

The work was made possible with the support of the Department of Law at the University of Siena and funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU - Mission 4, Component 1, CUP B61I24000450006.

1. Documents burned in the State Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina after thousands of protesters set fire to government buildings. In 2014, mass demonstrations erupted against a system that lacks transparent decision-making processes and enables corruption and the entrenchment of political elites.
2. Belma Lepir-Cviko, member of the polling station in Novo Sarajevo municipality, during the voting operations in absence for the early presidential elections of Republic of Srpska. Here, 66 people were registered, only one voted.
3. The polling station in Laktaši, the hometown and constituency of Bosnian Serb secessionist leader Milorad Dodik. In over twenty years in power, Dodik has built a vast personal empire. Much of this wealth has been converted into villas and assets abroad, including on the Slovenian coast, as revealed by journalists from an investigative agency.
4.Signboard of a restaurant with an image of Vladimir Putin near Banja Luka, reflecting the strong pro-Russian sentiment common in parts of Republika Srpska.

We’re happy to present our latest project “Dayton’s legacy”, that we produced in Bosnia last year.

An installation will be visible at the Certosa di Pontignano (SI) from the 23rd to the 26th of February with an official inauguration on Sunday the 22nd at 5.30pm.
There will be also an installation, together with a public talk, at MUACC - Museo universitario delle arti e delle culture contemporanee in Cagliari on March 5th at 6pm.

The work was made possible with the support of the Department of Law at the University of Siena and funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU - Mission 4, Component 1, CUP B61I24000450006.
Many thanks to Prof. Mario Perini and all the Department for the trust.

The second installment of the exhibition "NO PLACE LIKE HOME - Italian Photography since the 1980s," curated by Ralph Goertz, opened a couple weeks ago at the Schauwerk Museum in Sindelfilgen. Organized by IKS Photo Düsseldorf, the exhibition explores the influence of Italian photography on the development of European photographic history since the 1980s. Also on display is a selection from Workforce (2014-2017) by Michele Borzoni and Varco Appennino (2016-2020) by Simone Donati.

Around 300 works offer a perspective on Italy through the eyes of 42 photographers. The spectrum of exhibited works includes portraits, conceptual and serial works, socially, politically, and culturally contextualized photographs, and landscape photography, which holds a special place in Italian art.

An exhibition by IKS - Institut für Kunstdokumentation, Kunsthalle Darmstadt, SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen, and Draiflessen Collection.

“Cronache d’acqua – Immagini dal Centro Italia” (Water Chronicles – Images from Central Italy), a project commissioned by Gallerie d’Italia, the exhibition hub of Intesa Sanpaolo, will be presented to the public in Turin today, December 3rd at 6 pm. TerraProject developed four photographic stories exploring the relationship between water and agriculture, in collaboration with Green&Blue, a publication by La Repubblica/GEDI Group.

Simone Donati documented the experimental agricultural company of the Polytechnic University of Marche, where research fields and irrigation systems form a living laboratory for the future of farming. Michele Borzoni worked in Pistoia’s vast plant-nursery district, one of Europe’s most important hubs for ornamental horticulture, observing how growers manage water in an increasingly fragile climate. Pietro Paolini visited a vertical farm in Torrita di Siena, tracing how controlled-environment agriculture is reshaping production and consumption. Finally, Rocco Rorandelli explored San Benedetto del Tronto, focusing on an ambitious wastewater management project that aims to reduce pressure on local ecosystems and secure clean resources for local farmers.
