Most of you already know that I love going candid with my photography. In Iran, however, it is quite a challenge to take sneaky shots. You will stand out of the crowd and easily draw all the attention given the few tourists that are around. The Iranians seem to have a natural penchant for interacting with tourists and are always doing their utmost best to help you out in any possible way.

Therefore, I decided to do something different this time and I came to find out that Iran really is a photography paradise for a myriad of reasons, but mainly for its people. It is not uncommon for them to ask you to take photographs of them with no strings attached.

I have noticed that for the people in the “Western World” Iran seems like a country that is hard to grasp. People are misinformed, or not even informed at all. I believe there is a gaping chasm between what we think we know and what is actually happening, which oftentimes leads to wrong preconceptions of this wonderful country.

With my tiny project called “Faces of Iran” I hope to be able to get the Iranian people a little closer to you…

These are the guys maintaining the Chaukhtatgyi Temple in Yangon, which is famous for the absurdly huge reclining Buddha. On the background it is the Buddha’s back that you are witnessing, completely covered in gold. All the maintenance work is completely funded by donations made to this temple.

When travelling through Myanmar you will see an overwhelming amount of monks. The majority will be wearing orange or brown robes, but some of them stand out because of the eye-catching pink robes and the orange sash worn over the left shoulder.

The pink color represents sunshine and is designated for the nuns that are called “sila-rhan”, which means the keeper of morality. Usually, they leave their homes at an early age to live in the nunnery, where they spend their time servicing the community and engage in other activities such as teaching, meditating and studying.

For the poorer amongst them, being a sila-rhan is a way to escape poverty, to become educated, and to have an honorable position in society.

Did you know that Myanmar is the most religious Buddhist country in the world and has the highest proportion of monks and nuns, with somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of the population practicing Buddhism? (Davis Lazar, Monks of Burma). This photo shows a monk praying to honor the teachings of Buddha at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.

Many different things can be said about Yangon and opinions may differ, but I think everyone agrees on one thing: it is dirty! With mouthwatering street food spread across the city this creates a somewhat unappetizing juxtaposition.

With its people myopically throwing their trash all over the place, littering is a major issue in Yangon. Also, urinating in public areas seems like normal practice. It has been said that “If you don’t dare to urinate on the roadside, people here know that you are not a Yangon resident”.

The inhabitants of Yangon do not have the mentality to take care of the environment as much as we do. However, before anyone can start changing the mentality of an entire city, we need to ruminate on the design of the current system. The prerequisites for a clean city are simply not available; the waste collection system has not been developed properly and there is a lack of garbage bins.

Unfortunately, it does not seem like anything is going to change anytime soon. So for now, we are just compelled to enjoy the lovely street food of Yangon right next to exuberant piles of garbage.
