ENGLISH - Carloforte (U Paize, "The Land", or Carlofòrte in the language Tabarchino) is a town of 6,420 inhabitants in the province of Carbonia-Iglesias. It is located on the island of San Pietro, in the sub-region Sulcis-Iglesias, in Sardinia; The small island is located about 10 km from the coast of Sardinia, and is part of the Archipelago of Sulcis, together with the nearby S. Antioco's Island and with other small islands nearby.
Carloforte, is in the list of "The most beautiful villages in Italy" and it gives the feeling of joining one of the many charming villages of the Italian Riviera because of the architectural style of the buildings and the many "carrugi", typical narrow alleys and arcades. The island was, in fact, settled in 1738 by a group of "Pegliesi", people from Tabarca, located in Tunisia and has kept extremely live links with Genoa, maintaining strong traditions and customs of Liguria. The language is "tabarkino", the Ligurian dialect slightly modified. You can taste the typical pesto and focaccia and find out a kind of cooking with some influence from Tunisia and Sardinia.
With a great charming aspect of nature and landscape, the "green island" has fantastic pine forests alternate with Mediterranean vegetation. Beautiful and very different are its shores: spectacular white sand beaches, high cliffs and steep tract to the north and west. St Peter's Island is the place chosen by the "Eleonora's Falcon", a rare species, which during the summer nests on cliffs before tackling the big trip to Madagascar where he would spend the winter.
Another notable feature of Carloforte is the bluefin tuna. Every year during the spring is lowered the network system of the trap, one of the few still existing and working in Italy and around the world. Every year the island revives the ancient rite of tuna, that has come down to us almost unchanged, retaining its charm right in the tradition handed down over the centuries.

ITALIANO - Carloforte (U Paize, "La Terra", o Carloforte in lingua tabarchina) è un comune di 6.420 abitanti della provincia di Carbonia-Iglesias. Si trova sull'isola di San Pietro, nella sub-regione del Sulcis-Iglesias, in Sardegna; La piccola isola si trova a circa 10 km dalla costa della Sardegna, ed è parte dell'Arcipelago del Sulcis, insieme con la vicina isola di S. Antioco e con altre piccole isole vicine.
Carloforte, è nella lista de "I borghi più belli d'Italia" e dà la sensazione di entrare in uno dei tanti villaggi incantevoli della riviera italiana grazie allo stile architettonico degli edifici e dei tanti "caruggi", tipici vicoli stretti e portici. L'isola è stata, infatti, nel 1738, "abitata" da un gruppo di "Pegliesi", persone provenienti da Tabarca, che si trova in Tunisia e ha mantenuto legami estremamente vivi con Genova, mantenendo forti tradizioni e costumi della Liguria. Il linguaggio è "tabarchino", un dialetto ligure leggermente modificato. Si possono gustare il pesto e la focaccia tipica e scoprire una sorta di cucina con qualche influenza dalla Tunisia e Sardegna.
Un grande aspetto affascinante della natura e del paesaggio, "dell'isola verde" è che essa possiede fantastiche pinete che si alternano a vegetazione mediterranea. Bellissime e molto variegate in tipologia sono le sue sponde: spettacolari spiagge di sabbia bianca, alte scogliere e ripidi tratti a nord e ad ovest. Isola di San Pietro è il luogo scelto dal "Falco della Regina" il, una specie rara, che durante i nidi estivi sulle scogliere prima di affrontare il grande viaggio in Madagascar, dove avrebbe trascorso l'inverno.
Un'altra caratteristica estremamente importante di Carloforte è il tonno rosso. Ogni anno in primavera viene abbassato il sistema di reti tese a trappola, uno dei pochi ancora esistenti e funzionanti in Italia e in tutto il mondo. Ogni anno l'isola fa rivivere l'antico rito della mattanza del tonno, che è giunto fino a noi pressoché invariato, mantenendo immutato il suo fascino nella tradizione tramandata nel corso dei secoli.
