I’m happy to share with you a project that is very close to my heart, a collaboration with the City of Helsinki for the Rainbow Cities Network international photo exhibition, that is also showcased during the 2024 Helsinki Pride. This year's theme is "Q***r+ Elders and Pioneers."

The goal of this exhibition was to bring rainbow community elders into the spotlight, documenting their contributions to the q***r movement, showcasing their resilience, and encouraging exchange across generations. It aims to increase the visibility of older members within the LGBTQ+ community, recognizing their struggles and celebrating their achievements.

In front of my lens for this project was Hanna-Maria, a remarkable individual whose story profoundly touched me. Now in her 70s, Hanna-Maria has faced numerous challenges throughout her life. Since the age of three, she has dreamed of living as a woman. Despite significant obstacles and a lack of acceptance, she continues to express her true self through dance and music, finding joy in activities such as belly dancing, burlesque, and Russian gypsy dance.

Hanna-Maria’s journey is one of strength and courage. She finds joy in being portrayed n**e, celebrating the feminine details within her. She has had to pretend to be a man both in her work life and family life, and this ongoing struggle is exhausting. Yet, she finds happiness when she can fully be herself. Hanna-Maria has been part of various communities, including Seta's experience trainer at different events, contributing to the support and education of others.

Working on this project has been incredibly moving for me. It reinforced my belief in the power of photography to capture not just images, but stories and emotions. It is a privilege to share Hanna-Maria’s story with you, and I am grateful to her for her openness and trust.

You can check out selected photographs that took a part in the Rainbow Cities Network exhibition, including my own representing Finland, in the Helsinki City Hall until tomorrow 28.06 during the Helsinki Pride Week and between 5.07 and 19.08 in the Cultural Centre Stoa in Helsinki.

I had the biggest pleasure creating a photographic series together with that is now (11-12 May) showing during Q***r Women Congress in Katowice, Poland .kongres 🏳️‍🌈❤️

The photographic series is part of an exhibition called "PRZEKAZ" (Message). Message is an integral part of human life and interaction, and plays a key role in the exchange and development of ideas, culture and society. Its main purpose is causing a reaction, understanding, thought or action on the part of the recipient.

The exhibition gives voice and enables dialogue between viewer, subject and the artisr. It is a call to openness and empathy - dialogue that has the potential to change the perception of the world and each other.

I proudly present to you, Ania.

Ania, a 57-year-old q***r woman, theologian, and widow, shares her story for this project.

Ania's upbringing in a conservative family initially closed off to LGBTQ+ individuals instilled in her a deep empathy and fierce advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights within her family, including transgender members.

For her parents, both war veterans of advancing years, the path to embracing diversity was long and difficult. Yet, in the face of fear and confusion, they opted for love. Now, it falls upon them —their children and grandchildren—to carry forth the veil of advocacy.

Throughout her life, Ania has navigated a complex journey of self-discovery and acceptance. She sought alternative paths to express her identity and found solace in the support of her husband and later, a lover. For nearly two decades, she has dedicated herself to supporting the LGBTQ+ community within the Finnish Lutheran church.

Ania's understanding of her own identity evolved over time. While her first love was a woman, it wasn't until after the passing of her husband that she fully embraced her identity as a q***r woman. The loss of her husband to illness and the subsequent breakup with her lover, marked a profound turning point in her life, which she refers to as her "third life."

And to you Ania, if you will read this - you are the brightest star on the darkest sky. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️❤️❤️

Last year I had the greatest privilege of working for Schildts & Söderströms, together with Ralf Sirén and Marcus Lindqvist on the cover of their upcoming book "Soldat No 13". In the photo above, I asked Ralf for a moment to revisit his deepest memories of his time in Ukraine. Listening to his experiences and stories moved me deeply. The book will be released very soon, in the week 17/2024 and is available for pre-order. I'm so grateful for this chance and my biggest thanks go to Jonas Sundström for trusting me.

Soldat No 13 – Ralf Sirén and the war in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, the Russian army attacked Ukraine on a wide front. The war shocks Europe, and Ralf Sirén is one of those deeply affected.

On March 1, five days after Russia began its invasion, Ralf volunteers for Ukraine's international legion. The legion had been founded just a few hours earlier, and Ralf was the thirteenth soldier to sign his military contract.

In Soldat No 13, journalist Marcus Lindqvist tells about Ralf Sirén's experiences in the war in Ukraine. After a short training phase, Ralf, as a platoon leader, leads a motley crew of foreign soldiers at the front line in Kharkiv.

Ralf is forced to handle stress, fear, and the constant presence of death in a modern war. We read about Ralf's conflict with the battalion commander, about the camaraderie at the front line, and about the company's fierce battles during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. After Ralf comes home, the war continues to live in him, among other things through the reports of the war's brutality he receives from friends who stayed in Ukraine. Several of those who stayed fall in the battles.

The book also includes Ralf's photographs from the war.

I remember the first time in my life I took a naked photograph. This was shortly before I was accepted into my first photography school. My friend and I met in the attic of my house in Szczecin.

The sight of a naked and fragile body in such a harsh environment, where the sun's rays pierced through the soft skin, awakened something in me. I remember this feeling very well. I have always wanted to express certain emotions using the body as a tool, similar to the sculpture of the classical era.

There is something profound about how easy it is to simply be naked, and yet how much beauty we can find in that simplicity.

By joining me in my artistic n**e workshop, you can embark on a journey of self-discovery where the simplicity of being naked intertwines with the profound beauty of human emotions, just as it did for me when I first captured the fragile essence of the human form through my lens.
