From Heataly, 2025.

The project is an ongoing visual investigation into how climate change is reshaping not only the Italian landscape, but also the symbolic and cultural identity tied to it.

As floods grow more intense, snow becomes artificial and mountains turn into open-air party venues, Heataly explores how these transformations reflect and influence deeper societal shifts.

In picture: A field on fire during the summer. Italy is increasingly split in two by the effects of climate change. While the North is facing a surge in extreme rainfall and flooding, the South is grappling with intensifying heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and a sharp rise in wildfires.

According to a report by ISPRA (Italian Institute
for Environmental Protection and Research), over 70% of summer wildfires occurred in southern regions, a number that has grown steadily over the past decade.

In picture: The Tagliamento is one of the last Alpine rivers in Europe to flow naturally, without dams or major alterations.
Freshwater ecosystems — from wetlands to rivers — play a key role in the global water cycle, supplying, purifying, and protecting freshwater resources.

Poor management, combined with climate change, is threatening these habitats, undermining their ability to provide vital freshwater services and putting both human communities and nature at risk.

In picture: Wetlands play a crucial role in fighting climate change, as they can absorb carbon, regulate water cycles, and preserve biodiversity.

Despite their importance, according to the Global Wetland Outlook, they are disappearing at a rate three times faster than forests, with 35% lost since 1970.

According to the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), nearly 94% of Italian municipalities (7,423) are at hydrogeological risk, including landslides, floods, and coastal erosion.

Around 6.8 million people are exposed to flood risk.

The climate crisis is increasingly manifesting through extreme weather events.

In just 16 months, Emilia-Romagna region has faced at least three floods.

In picture: A cross-country ski trail in a completely snow-free forest. The 90% of Italy’s ski slopes are equipped with artificial snowmaking systems.
These consume an estimated 96,840,000 m³ of water annually, which is equivalent to the yearly water use of a city of 1 million people.

In picture: Wrapped in fur, a woman dances, and drinks beneath the snow-dusted peaks of the Dolomites. More and more, ski resorts attract visitors dressed for style rather than sport. This crowd is drowned, not by the slopes, but by the party, in some of the Alps’ most Instagrammable locations.
