PARIS IS GONNA PARIS

Paris can be beautiful. Paris can be heartbreaking. Sometimes both before lunch.

For the past several years, I have been documenting the city I now call home, searching for those moments where elegance collides with absurdity. A city of grand boulevards, tiny dogs, cigarette breaks that appear to be full-time jobs, fashion statements, romance, bureaucracy, and, of course, bread that is unnecessarily long.

This is a place where someone dressed like they stepped off a runway can still manage to step in something unpleasant.

Part love letter and part visual anthropology, Paris Is Gonna Paris explores the humour, contradictions, and everyday theatre of life in one of the world’s most iconic cities.

It asks a simple question:

What happens when Paris simply goes about being itself?

The answer, as always, is that Paris is gonna Paris.

Soon we will head down south and leave Paris for the summer. I miss it already.

I recently ran into my landlady at the door of my building. She told me in French, “Monsieur Visser, you are a real Parisian now”. I was surprisingly profoundly honored to be told such a thing.

Back in my hometown of Holland, Michigan. The annual Tulip Time festival is underway, so there are a ton of wooden shoes, dutch costumes and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet out on the town.

Paris is going to Paris.
One of the things about the French language that I find so amusing, is some of the terms you hear and how they make sense in a very French way. I was recently speaking with Lo, my brother from another mother, and the word bribe came up in the conversation. I had no idea how to say this word in French. The French word was found with a two pronged method: through the word “baksheesh” we both knew and me looking it up on my phone.
The French word for bribe is “pot-de-vin”, literally a pot of wine. This is the best French of terms I’ve learned in a while. Just remember, when coming to France, have the wine ready.

Paris is gonna Paris.
Paris is gonna Paris is a project I started a few years back to document the people I meet as well as different places in the city I see on my daily walks. The photo walks now are often as much about running into friends and people I’ve photographed before as they are about the photography. I sometimes hear from other photographers that there is an expectation of street photos to be candid, I tried shooting only candid back in the day and just wasn’t having fun. I want to talk to the people I photograph. So I do when I am able. This seems to work for me.
Paris is going to Paris came about from running around Paris shooting two other projects: Scooters & dogs. Both of which I’ve had a ton of fun shooting. The scooter drivers, I believe, can see that I’d really like to be haulin’ ass around the city on a shooter ( I found a rental place so that may happen yet ) and the dogs can see I’m a dog person ( we now have a chihuahua, a challenging dog lovers dog ).Danny and I talked about projects on last week’s livestream with the uber talented guest . ( Mark will be a presenter at the upcoming at the end go May ). We all seemed to agree too many projects is better than too few.

Paris is gonna Paris.
This morning’s photo walk. Ran into the meat delivery guys over on rue de Levi and they allowed me to get on the truck to shoot some lamb that was being delivered. The awesome metro repairmen at Blanche gave me an amazing old laminated metro map that they were changing out with the you are here sticker on it-it’s like 4 x 3 foot, so good and big. Stoked. Got a haircut and a shave at the Sri-Lanka barber near place de Clichy. I saw that le Wepler restaurent has been completely gutted since I was last there. I really really Hope it is just a renew atop mas that place was awesome. I checked the website and it says temporarily closed so we will see.
Every time I see a Coca-Cola advertisement I’m reminded of Lenny’s series invoking the same. Check out Lenny’s series you have a chance.
Getting excited for the London Festival coming up at the end of May. The submissions for the photography contest this year were fantastic and it’s an honour to be able to display all of the finalists at the festival’s exhibition. There were so many amazing photos.
