Stephanie & Paul • Hotel Caruso • Ravello • Italy
Part three
The last picture in this post is, without question, the one I get asked about the most. The staff at Hotel Caruso have even told me that photographers have come by trying to recreate it, only to leave puzzled. It was taken ten years ago—no AI involved, just a lot of effort. It was a challenge on the day itself, and afterward, it took at least an hour or two in Photoshop to bring it together. I was also incredibly lucky to be allowed to shoot from inside the pool, access that’s no longer possible. Since then, I’ve probably tried to recreate the shot thirty times, but this one will always be the original.
I live for those moments when an idea completely takes over, and I find myself following strange, magical instructions. Honestly, I have no idea where these ideas come from, and sometimes it’s a little terrifying even as I’m giving directions, asking myself, “What on earth am I doing?” A few days before taking this photo, I’d watched a video about the making of a Chanel advert, which used collages to create a Victorian pop-up book effect. Clearly, my subconscious was already at work, figuring out how to do something similar.
If I’m being honest, there’s no room for arrogance in this process, because the best ideas feel like they come through you, not from you. The only real credit I can take is being brave enough to look a little crazy in the moment. I’m so grateful that after all these years, the hotel staff know me well enough that when they see one of these mad ideas take hold, they step in to help. That trust in my process—in my madness—means the world to me.
And just to clarify, I didn’t put this image at the end of the carousel to make you scroll—it’s simply too dark for my current profile aesthetic.
