There’s nothing like a New Orleans second line!!✨ Enjoy some of my favorite clips from Avery & Mildred’s epic wedding!
Do you know what a second line is? Discover 8 surprising things about it:
1. A second line parade is a joyful street celebration rooted in New Orleans tradition.
2. The “first line” is the brass band and main procession.
3. The “second line” is everyone else dancing and waving handkerchiefs.
4. It’s part music, part community, and all about celebrating life together.
5. The second line tradition grows out of a blend of West African cultural practices, Caribbean influences, and local Black community traditions dating back to the 19th century.
6. One major root is in West African dance and drumming traditions, where music and movement were central to community gatherings and spiritual expression.
7. Enslaved Africans carried these practices to Louisiana, where they evolved under new conditions. Turning them into celebrations of culture, identity and community.
8. Today, they’re both a living tradition and a powerful symbol of New Orleans’ history, where remembrance and celebration exist side by side.
