Between 2019 and 2021, the EU banned pesticides such as Chlorpyrifos, Mancozeb, Chlorothalonil and Carbendazim from domestic agriculture due to their classification as endocrine disruptors and potential carcinogens. Despite this, these compounds continue to be produced and exported by European companies, being extensively used in banana and pineapple crops that are ultimately shipped back to European consumers’ tables.
In Costa Rica, sixth country in the world for pesticide density use and major banana and pineapple exporters, these compounds were found in animal blood, indoor school air, groundwater, human urine in quantities up to 5 times higher than normal.
