Another small selection from an unforgettable few hours with the Atlantic Puffins on Skomer Island.
Every bird seemed to have its own personality — curious, clumsy, determined and endlessly photogenic. It’s hard not to get drawn into the character of these incredible seabirds while they spend their short breeding season on the island before disappearing back out into the open Atlantic.

A few weeks each year, Skomer Island becomes one of the most special wildlife places in the UK.

Hundreds of thousands of seabirds return here for the breeding season — including the island’s famous puffins. For just a couple of months each spring and summer, these incredible little birds come ashore to nest in burrows, raise a single chick, and make the most of the long daylight hours and rich seas around the Welsh coast before heading back out into the open Atlantic.

Feeling very privileged to spend time among them and photograph them in their world. Tiny birds, huge personalities, and a reminder of how brief and precious wild moments can be.

A pair of Atlantic puffins on Skomer Island performing one of their most iconic courtship rituals

By throwing their heads back and lifting their beaks toward the sky puffins communicate with their mate through a behaviour known as “billing.” More than just a display, this ritual helps strengthen pair bonds and reinforce ownership of their nesting burrow during breeding season.

The Green Bridge of Wales - an amazing sea structure. Quite difficult to find as you need access through a military range but worth the wait.

The bridge over the Atlantic joins the Isle of Seil with mainland Scotland built in 1793 allowing passage over the Clachan Sound.

The Anglesey Barracks built in the 1870s to house the workers in the Dinorwig Quarry. Workers would live there during the week high in the Quarry with no services (electric, plumbing) - 4 in each small building - then travel home at the weekend. They were eventually condemned as unfit for habitation in 1938. The weather was very changeable during my hike and you can see the rain on the 2nd photo.
