Artist Spotlight+ with Ekaterina Frolova
Ekaterina Frolova is a documentary photographer whose educational background spans cultures and continents. She holds a degree in Languages and Area Studies from Lomonosov Moscow State University, a Master's degree in Photography and Design from ELISAVA in Barcelona, and has also studied at TSEKH in Saint Petersburg, the New York Film Academy and West Virginia University.
Her work explores the dynamic relationship between people, space and environment, often focusing on young people as a source of hope and resilience.
In 2024, she won the first edition of the Patricia D. Richards Award, a special prize within the URBAN Photo Awards dedicated to photographers under 35, with Young Cuba, a photographic project that offers an intimate and contemporary look at the lives of young Cubans, capturing their culture, aspirations and everyday challenges.
The award paved the way for a fellowship that, under the mentorship of Denis Curti, led to the creation of Border Stories.
Developed between Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy), the European Capitals of Culture 2025, Border Stories explores the concept of borders by engaging with the people who live alongside them and seeking to understand what the border represents in their daily lives.
Border Stories has since become a photobook, and the photographs were exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Trieste Photo Days Festival 2025.
In this Artist Spotlight, Ekaterina reflects on what receiving the award meant to her, how the project that earned her the recognition came to life, and how her collaboration with Denis Curti accompanied her through a new phase of artistic growth.
