Sixth photostory: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice!
Hellblade is an action-adventure game inspired by Norse mythology that focuses on the journey of Senua, a Celtic warrior determined to go to Hell to rescue her dead lover's soul from its ruler goddess Hela.
Ninja Theory's greatest achievement here is by far its ambitious use of the gaming medium to explore the subject of mental health: the player experiences the story through the eyes and mind of a girl suffering from severe psychosis, which affects her reality with hallucinations, haunting delusions, voice-hearing, and a pervading sense of anxiety.
I cannot judge how accurate this disease representation really is, although it was created with the support of mental health professionals as well as direct feedback from actual sufferers. In any case, Melina Juergens's outstanding acting and the 3D audio-enhanced voice-hearing greatly contribute to portray Senua as a shattered girl trying hard to be better, making her one of the most compelling and memorable gaming characters I have ever come across.
As for my photostory, this time I tried to chronicle the game's heroic plot while emphasizing the metaphor of Senua's quest as a battle in her head to process a trauma, stop clinging to the past and rise again after a fall. Because after all, to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Self-trust is the essence of heroism".
Please enjoy and feel free to like, share and comment! 😊
