🇹🇿 Crowned

The elegant grey crowned crane is the national symbol and national bird of Uganda, and is one of Africa’s most majestic and beautiful birds. The name is due to its yellow crown of feathers, tipped with black. This crane moves gracefully in a most stately manner with a very dignified gait. In flight it is beautiful, using slow down strokes followed by quick upward strokes of its wings.

🇹🇿 Lion face

The lion has the loudest roar of all the big cats. It’s so loud it can reach 114 decibels at a distance of around one metre and can be heard from as far away as five miles. This volume is all to do with the shape of the cat’s larynx. Most animals have triangular vocal cords but a lion’s are square and flat, which allows them to respond more easily to air passing through. This means a louder roar with less effort.

🇹🇿 Dik-dik

Kirk’s dik-diks are tiny antelopes that vary in color depending on their habitat but are typically yellowish-gray to reddish-brown on its back and grayish-white on their belly. Males have horns that are ringed and stout at the base, which are often concealed by a tuft of hair on their forehead. These antelopes have beautiful, large, dark eyes surrounded by a white ring. And while their eyes are stunning, they provide more than just sight. Preorbital glands appear as a black spot below the inside corner of each eye. These glands produce a dark, sticky secretion used to scent-mark their territories.

The most distinguishing feature is their elongated snout, which is also an evolved cooling mechanism that stops them from overheating, even in extreme temperatures. This also helps minimize their need for water.

🇹🇿 Oxpeckers

The behaviour of oxpeckers towards large mammals was previously thought to be an example of mutualism, though recent research suggests the relationship is parasitic in nature. They feed on ectoparasites, particularly ticks, but often the ticks have already fed on the ungulate host, and no statistically significant link has been shown between oxpecker presence and reduced ectoparasite load. Furthermore, they have been observed to open new wounds and enhance existing ones in order to drink the blood of their perches.

🇹🇿 Mud

Rolling around in the mud is more than just fun for elephants. Under the harsh African sun the heat and UV radiation can be deadly and with their few hair and sweat glands, they have to find other ways to cool off. Romping around in mud not only cools them down, but provides a protective layer to shield their body from the sun’s rays and it also relieves them from insect bites.
