The plate-billed mountain toucan only lives on one slope of the Andes. West-facing Ecuador, barely spilling into southern Colombia, and nowhere else on earth. The yellow tile on the bill is what names it. It’s the only mountain toucan in its whole range, so there’s nothing to confuse it with.

I sat in a hide near Mindo for two hours waiting on this one. These birds are creatures of habit. They work the same branches at roughly the same time, which is the only reason you can plan around something this shy. When it finally stepped out of the fog onto the moss, I had maybe five seconds before it dropped back into the canopy.

The forest here pulls 14 feet of rain a year. Everything drips, the light never fully arrives, and the branch wears more moss than bark. You don’t fight the gray. You just wait for the color to land in the middle of it.
