Formed over 140 million years ago during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are geological masterpieces situated along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their creation began as layers of resistant Portland limestone, softer sands, and clays were compressed, tilted vertically by tectonic plate collisions roughly 25 million years ago, and relentlessly eroded by wave action. At Durdle Door, sea waves eventually punched through a weak point in the hard limestone wall, carving out the iconic natural arch whose name derives from the Old English word thirl (meaning to pierce or drill). Just a mile to the east, Lulworth Cove formed through a similar mechanism when the ocean breached the outer limestone barrier and rapidly swept away the softer clays behind it, hollowing out a near-perfect horseshoe-shaped bay. Historically managed by the Welds family as part of the Lulworth Estate since 1641, these landforms evolved from tranquil fishing sites into pivotal locations for early 19th-century geologists studying coastal erosion, eventually becoming two of England’s most celebrated and visited natural landmarks.
