Face to face with one of the Red Sea’s most charismatic residents! 😤 Look at the attitude on this guy.
This vibrant Clark’s Anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii) was captured during an intense macro session on our 2023 expedition to the Red Sea. We were exploring a shallow reef system when I spotted this beautiful pairing. The fish was snuggled deep within the swollen, bulbous tentacles of its host bubble-tip anemone, keeping a watchful eye on its domain.
For this shot, I wanted to create something dramatic. By using controlled lighting, I was able to carve the subject out of the surroundings, highlighting that brilliant yellow face and striking white stripes while letting the rest of the anemone fade into moody shadows.
About the shot: Underwater macro photography is a game of incredible patience and precision. It involves getting mere inches away from tiny subjects while battling currents and maintaining perfect buoyancy. The goal is to reveal textures and personalities—like the grumpy expression of this little fish—l that are easily missed when swimming by.
