During my trip to Japan I found it very difficult approaching strangers to ask if I could take their photograph.

This was for a few reasons, the main one being I find it very difficult to do this wherever I am, even though I've been at this so long.
I had also been told by one of my hosts that culturally taking images of people on the street may be deemed more rude than I am used to and as ever I didn't want to cause upset.
I think though I took this as the perfect excuse to not try as hard and push myself.

On my last night in Tokyo I was in Shibuya on the search for a clothing shop searching for Japanese denim I decided in need a drink and I'd become fond of these lemon beers.
So I decided to go into a convenience store and as I did I passed a small group of young guys outside with skateboards. As I walked by I noticed they were all smoking ( I had been trying to not cave and smoke) and they were all very well dressed, incredibly stylish and laughing with each other.
I wanted to ask to take a photograph but I bottled it and went right into the shop..
Inside the shop I was scanning the aisles and telling myself that it was my last evening and that if they were still outside I need to ask. If not for teg image but for my own personal wellbeing as I would be upset with myself for not trying.

As you can see, I asked.

'Lunch Hour'

I spotted this man having some downtime on what I assume was his lunch break. By the time I'd wandered around him to the other side of the 'lake' he was still enjoying the calmness of the water and I envied his stillness.

Both images shot using Illford Delta on Mamiya C33.

You may notice white spots in the shadows on this image. This is where the negative has either been exposed to high temperatures, a manufacturing issue or has been improperly developed, this defect is called mottling.

Illford recalled some batches of 120 film so I've put in a claim. You get a better look at this on the last image which also happens to be a silhouette in a cave on a different island.

I actually quite like the effect on these two images, I think this is because on both of these trips (Lewis & Eigg), I saw some of the best starry skies that I've ever seen. It may also be because I love Star Wars. Star Trek and the 90's/early 00's show Stars in Your Eyes. Don't tell Ilford 🤫.

I am feeling quite laden with emotion.
Maybe I'm tired, maybe I'm a little overwhelmed at starting my first ever self led project a couple of months back.
But jeez I can't stress how amazing it is to go from taking images on a beast of a camera, taking 12 shots often over a few days, stacking up rolls upon rolls and then hand developing them, following that, getting good friend and lab tech .on.tayside.heritage to scan them and then onto the editing and looking at them properly tonight.

It does break my heart (and my oc no d brain) when I have missed focus and not taken a backup of the subject, or the composition isn't right, or something else has gone wrong.. but It's all learning.
My god it's seriously rough at times, especially when you're used to digital.
Then, out of nowhere, you get an incredible image that blows you away, it really is a labour of love.

I'm excited to continue this project that's lead me all over parts of Scotland that I'd never been to before. It's far from over so the images and interviews will have to wait for now but know this, I have learnt more about my practice in the past 8 months than I have in the past 12 years!

Have this double exposure for now and expect a few more to come.

If I've taken your image as part of my 21st century community project (title pending) you can expect the image(s) asap. They won't be on here though as they are being saved for something bigger than Instagram.
