写真は現代美術の扉を開いた巨匠、マン・レイへのオマージュ作品です。 彼の代表作『アングルのヴァイオリン（Le Violon d'Ingres）』は、恋人キキがターバンを巻いた後ろ姿に、彼が敬愛した画家ドミニク・アングルの名画『ヴァルパイソンの浴女』の構図を重ね合わせて撮影されました。撮影後、アングルの趣味（ヴァイオリン）へのウィットに富んだ敬意として、プリントされたキキの背中にヴァイオリンの「f字孔」を描き加えたことはあまりにも有名です。 さらに、アングルの『浴女』自体もまた、古典的なヴィーナス像の系譜に連なるオマージュであったと言われています。 本作は、そうした美術史における重層的な「引用の連鎖」そのものを主題とした、多重のオマージュの試みです。
This is the 4th image from the 20-image panel that earned me the Fellowship.
This photograph is an homage to Man Ray, the master who opened the doors of modern art for photography. His iconic masterpiece, Le Violon d'Ingres (Ingres's Violin), was conceived when he saw the back of his lover, Kiki de Montparnasse, wearing a turban, which evoked the composition of The Valpinçon Bather by the painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whom he deeply admired. After capturing the image, as a witty tribute to Ingres's known passion for the violin, Man Ray famously added the instrument's 'f-holes' onto the photographic print of Kiki's back. Furthermore, it is said that Ingres's Bather itself was an homage in the lineage of classical depictions of Venus. This work, therefore, is a multilayered tribute intended to explore this rich genealogy of artistic reference within art history.
