When Culture Is All a Girl Has

While documenting communities in Marsabit, Northern Kenya, I met a 17-year-old mother of three who had never been to school and spoke only her local language.

She was married at the age of 10.

Her story made me think about how education, culture, early marriage and economic opportunity intersect for girls living in remote communities.

Yet she has a valuable skill traditional beadwork.

For many women and girls in Northern Kenya, beadwork is more than culture; it can be a source of income. But without access to markets, training, design, finance and business opportunities, these skills often remain at a survival level.

What if we invested in the skills they already have?

What if traditional beadwork could be connected to modern fashion, clothing, accessories and global markets—creating sustainable income while preserving cultural heritage?

We don't have to choose between culture and progress.

We can preserve culture, expand opportunities and empower women at the same time.

Education gives girls choices.
Skills create possibilities.
Markets create sustainability.

The question is: Are we investing enough in turning the skills within these communities into opportunities?

As a documentary photographer, I believe stories like these should not only be seen they should start conversations about solutions.

On this International Youth Day, I celebrate the young people who are proving that agriculture is not just a livelihood it's a pathway to innovation, resilience, and lasting community impact.

As a documentary storyteller, it was an honour for Didack Media to serve as the media production consultant behind this project, documenting the inspiring journeys of youth embracing agroecology across six counties. These are stories that challenge perceptions, amplify local solutions, and inspire the next generation to lead sustainable food systems.
