I’ve done a lot of safaris in this line of work. Traveled to countless places, captured endless moments. But every time I get commissioned for a project in Marsabit, it feels different—like I’m somehow closer to home.

There’s something about this place that stirs me. Maybe it’s the weight of all the things I wish I had grown up knowing. Maybe it’s the pull of my roots.

For those who know me, you know I’ve always had this longing—a quiet desire to go back to where it all began. To trace my history, piece by piece. My father, who I barely knew, was from Ethiopia, and that connection has always lingered in the back of my mind.

There’s a beauty in how the culture flows from Ethiopia down to Moyale and Marsabit—through the Borana, the Burji, the Oromo. Their language, their lifestyle, their traditions… it all fascinates me. Maybe it’s the photographer in me, drawn to their stories. Or maybe, deep down, it’s something more—a need to feel rooted in what I didn’t grow up with.

Every trip to Marsabit brings me a little closer to that. A little closer to understanding. And that, for me, makes every journey worth it.
