Sadat Photo-Stories Sadat Photo-stories—a space that serves both as a photography portfolio and a visual storytelling blog.

It houses stories offering engaging narratives, life perspectives and evocative imagery. My name is Anwar Sadat Swaka, a documentary photographer based in Nairobi, Kenya working under SADAT PHOTO-STORIES. I specialize in reframing narratives about urban spaces and communities, with a focus on showcasing the beauty, vibrancy and resilient spirit of people and communities. My creative journey reflec

ts a deep commitment to shifting narratives and uncovering deeper truths through visual storytelling. While I am largely self taught, I also received training at The VII Academy under the Foundry Foundation and Reuters Digital Journalism. I gained skills in visual storytelling, photojournalism, and immersive reporting. These experiences provided me with the the confidence to document life with a unique sensitivity to people’s realities. I have received notable awards, including honors from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for winning the zero maternal mortality death Health photo contest, Global Health 50/50 Representation Matters award and the United Nations Aligned Photo competition award. My work has been exhibited and showcased by The Guardian Magazine in 2019 and Global Health 50/50 at University College London (UCL) in 2020 and 2021 with features in several publications.

For years, I abandoned myself by turning the camera toward other people. I became so devoted to telling their stories that I forgot I had a story worth telling too.

The last few years have humbled me because, whether I liked it or not, the camera eventually turned back on me during some of the most significant moments of my life. In doing so, I began to study myself. I started questioning everything I do, looking twice, paying closer attention, and learning to see with greater honesty.

I'm beginning to realize that there is still so much energy within me—so much curiosity, love, and purpose—that I can put out in the world. These days, my destination is no longer a place I need to arrive at, but a way of seeing. A lifelong commitment to discovering the world with new eyes, again and again.

I am deeply grateful to the people who have brought me joy this past year. You have been the beautiful gardens where my soul has found room to bloom.

I'm also learning that if a little dreaming is dangerous, then the cure isn't to dream less—it's to dream more. In fact, we might as well dream all the time.

If you asked me what I'm doing with this extraordinary gift of life I've been given, I might not have a simple answer. But I do know this: it is an incredible privilege to be alive and healthy in a world that often feels uncertain, fragile, and on the edge of collapse.

Happy birthday to me.

As I continue walking into the unseen future, I pray that we all find the courage to follow the light, wherever it may lead us.

Now... give me your money. 😂🎂

I document Project Elimu with the same intentions I document any other place. To reveal structure, to interrogate space, and to honour how people create possibility within it.

Through this, I wonder: What do our spaces say about us? What do we inherit from them, and what do we resist?

Project Elimu is home to Kibera's ballet dancers and a growing community of young creatives. Working with children across 25 schools in Nairobi's informal settlements, the organisation runs weekly after-school programmes in ballet, creative writing, digital literacy, and other forms of arts and technology education.

Reaching for my camera, I was not always, only documenting space , I am often witnessing how we are seen and unseen on our own terms. I try to retain as complete an image, of the scene I have observed, a person I have met or an experience I have undergone.

Often it takes around 21 days to build or break a habit. Martin, a 23-year-old musician, has committed himself to quitting ci******es and redirecting that energy towards his music.

I document him for One More Day with the same intention I bring to every story: to reveal structure, interrogate space, and honour the ways people live.

Through this work, I ask: What do addiction, healing, and personal transformation look like in the lives of young people? How do the spaces we inhabit shape our ability to change? What do we inherit from them, and what do we choose to resist?

subconsciously, I am reminded that I am not simply documenting a person or a place. I am witnessing the quiet negotiations between identity, habit, and hope. I try not only focus on what is visible but about making space for what often goes unseen.

I try to retain as complete an image as possible, not only of the scene before me, but of the person I have met and the experience we have shared. In doing so, the work becomes less about the act of photography and more about the universal process of becoming sharing and holding space.

In Nairobi's Kibera settlement, a community of older persons continues to shape their life, preserve collective memory, care for one another, and contribute to their community while navigating the realities of aging, health challenges, and social invisibility.

Around the world, populations are growing older faster than societies are preparing for. Yet the conversation on aging is often shaped by fear. Fear of dependency, fear of social burden, fear of irrelevance. This fear-based narrative erases the lived wisdom, creativity, productivity, and cultural memory that older persons carry. It turns aging into a crisis, instead of a shared human journey.

Through intimate interactions of daily life with older persons at , we are learning that growing older in one of Africa's most dynamic urban communities is both a struggle and an act of resilience.

It take 20-21 days to change or create a habit. Martin, a 23 year old artist decides to embark on a journey of quitting cigattes and focus on his music talent.

I document one more day in the life of a music artist with the same intentions I document any other person or place . To reveal structure, to interrogate space, and to honor how people live.

Through this, I wonder: What does addiction, healing and personal trasformation look like in the lives of young people. How does our spaces influence our transformation? What do we inherit from them, and what do we resist?

Often, I am reminded that I am not just documenting people and space, I am witnessing how we are seen and unseen. I try to retain as complete an image, of the scene I have observed, a person I have met or an experience I have undergone.

I have often wondered, What kinds of futures are shaped in classrooms, football fields, and conversations that encourage consent, self-worth, and leadership? What does it mean for a community to invest in its young people? What becomes possible when young girls are given the language, confidence and support to make informed decisions about their lives?

Time spent with and .girls at is not simply about documenting an outreach session. I document them with the same intentions I document any other person or place. To observe the enviroment, reveal the structure and to honor how people live within the spaces I enter.

I try to retain as complete an image as possible of a person I have met, a scene I have observed,or ye knowledge I have learned. In these moments, I can't help but think, What do our spaces say about us? What do we inherit from them, and what do we resist?
