LET'S CORRECT AFRICA'S TRUE SIZE
For generations, many of us have looked at world maps without questioning what they show us.
The problem isn't that Africa was ever small.
The problem is how easily a map can make it look small.
The widely used Mercator projection preserves direction and shape for navigation, but it significantly exaggerates the apparent size of regions farther from the Equator. Africa, meanwhile, can appear smaller in comparison than its actual land area suggests.
Africa is approximately 30.4 million square kilometres.
That's a continent larger than the United States, China, India and several other major countries combined.
And yet, the picture many of us grew up with doesn't always communicate that reality.
This is not about making Africa look bigger.
Africa doesn't need exaggeration.
Africa needs accurate representation.
Because the way we map the world influences the way we understand the world.
So let's educate.
Let's question.
Let's correct misconceptions.
Let's show Africa as it truly is.
AFRICA WAS NEVER SMALL.
