Dailylife Kibera

Dailylife Kibera Started by Kelvin Juma, a documentary photographer raised in Kibera, based in Nairobi, Kenya. Home to an estimated number of 400,000 to 1 million people.

A long term ongoing photo project covering Socio-economic and dynamic culture of individuals and the general mundane in Kibera. Kibera is popularly known as the largest slum in Africa inside Nairobi, Kenya. The general narrative has its facts leaning towards filth, dirt, crime and hopelessness. However, there is so much more hidden that is not highlighted in the mainstream media. This long-term on

going project aims to change this narrative by exploring other visuals unseen and stories untold from a local’s perspective. Covering Socio-economic and dynamic culture of individuals and the general mundane. Offering an open-minded view. that can bring about insightful conversation.

“Being raised up in the largest slum in Africa made me a victim of misrepresentation by the
mainstream media. My first instinct was to visually represent my community without bias."
Daily life Kibera is an ongoing exploration of a slum culture from a local’s perspective, presented as a publication, archive, and a blog - serving as a platform for creative dialogue with the current and next generation while preserving and showcasing its dynamic culture and livelihood through a contemporary unbiased lens.
