As we find ourselves in the height of summer, I’m thinking back to a winter trip with surfer Sanna Hörvallius (Sanna Maria Elisabeth Hörvallius) to the stunning Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway. Home to only a handful of year-round residents, Unstad has become one of the world’s most iconic cold-water surf destinations, drawing surfers from around the globe with its powerful waves and breathtaking Arctic scenery.
Here, Sanna and fellow surfers embrace the icy waves beneath the rugged mountains of Unstad’s coastline. “I’m not that picky about waves—I will surf anything,” she said.
From Beyond Waves, my National Geographic Society supported project exploring the lives of women surfers around the world.
