Portraits of History: Karakol, Kyrgyzstan

The temple was built between 1904 and 1910 to serve as a place of worship for Karakol’s Dungan refugee population, which had settled in this newly-founded Russian military outpost in the 1880s after fleeing ethnic violence in China.

With its tip-tilted triple roof, carved-layered eaves, and wooden pillars, the mosque channels echoes of classical eastern architecture. Its exterior is a colour explosion, painted in a mixture of blue, green, purple, red, and yellow.

Portraits of Culture: Traditions

If you were to ask me why I travel I would tell you it's for my love of different cultures. I prefer slow intentional travel. I'm not checking things off a list or stepping my foot across a border just to say I've been somewhere. I want to explore and experience a new culture and place. Their clothing, jewelry, food, music, dance, traditions, lifestyle, stories, and beliefs among the oceans, mountains, and forests of the world.

Here we learned about the Kyrgyz way of making Yurts. A long tradition of careful patterns with natural materials. Thanks again to for teaching us about your traditions!

Portraits of Place: Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral

The Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral is located in the center of Karakol. It was built of hewn logs in 1894-1895 on the ruins of the brick church. On the roof you can see the traditional gilded domes of Orthodox churches.

Portraits of People: Kyrgyz People

The early Kyrgyz people have their origins in the western parts of modern-day Mongolia. In Chinese ancient sources, these tribes were described as fair-skinned, green- or blue-eyed and red-haired people with a mixture of European and East Asian features.

Portraits of Tradition: Kyrgyz Yurts

The design of a yurt is suited for the nomadic lifestyle of the Kyrgyz people. The frame is circular and made from lightweight wood sourced from nearby forests, and the felt coverings are easy to transport. The wall structure, known as the kerege, is an interlaced lattice fixed with skin or rope, meaning that traditionally no nails were needed for assembly.

Learning how to make our own yurt in Kyrgyzstan with the help of the amazing in September 2025.

Portraits of Nature: The legend of the Skazka ‘Fairytale’ Canyon

According to a local legend, the Issyk-Kul valley was once home to several villages. In one of those villages lived a beautiful young woman. One day a huge red dragon saw her and instantly fell in love. But the young woman rejected his advances. Raging with anger, the dragon vowed to drown all the villages in the valley. Every night he tried to suck up water from the local wells with his magic. The residents managed to prevent this by covering the wells with golden lids that blocked the dragon’s magic. But one night the beautiful young woman forgot to seal her well with the golden lid. The dragon managed to suck up the water, flooding the entire valley. This is how lake Issyk-Kul is said to have been created. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the lake, the dragon laid down on the south shore and petrified there, looking out over Issyk-Kul forever.
