Boriam might be my favorite spot in Korea for sunrise.

I was shooting handheld, so the ISO is quite high. Maybe one day I’ll get a good tripod. I always find them annoying, though.

한국전쟁 당시 곡성 관음사가 소실되었을 때, 이 검게 그을린 석조 불두(佛頭)는 건물 잔해 속에 파묻혀 있었습니다. 당시 보물로 지정되어 있던 원통전과 그 내부의 금동관음보살좌상 역시 이때 완전히 소실되었습니다.

When Gokseong Gwaneumsa was destroyed during the Korean War, this charred stone Buddha face was recovered in the rubble. The former Wontongjeon and guilt bronze Gwanseum statue inside, both Treasures, were completely destroyed.

Joangsa, in Gimje. A very small temple with a really great Samseonggak, Three Spirits Shrine, including what I believe is a portrait of Dangun.

This was fun to observe. The hightide came up over the path with a few people still at the hermitage. The monk had to make a few trips back and forth to bring them to the main island.

6 temples were added to the registered traditional temple list in 2025. I'll have to dig through and see what's changed.

My son asked if statues in temples are made with real gold. So, I brought him to Yaksuam, above Silsangsa, to see the wooden Amitabul altar piece, a replica of the one from 1782. It used to sit behind an Amitabul statue but now it is the sole piece in the hall.

어느 남자가 어두운 길을 걸으며 등불을 들고 있으면서도 밖에 불이 있는지를 찾고 있었다.
한 스님이 그를 보시고 다가가 물었다.
“불을 찾는데 왜 등불을 들고 있소?”
남자가 대답했다.
“불을 찾으면 볼 수 있을 것 같아서요.”
스님이 미소를 지으며 말씀하셨다.
“등불을 꺼 보게. 그리하면 너의 안을 보리라.”
남자는 등불을 끄고 잠시 눈을 감았다. 어둠 속에서 그는 자신의 마음속 깊은 곳에 환한 빛이 있음을 알게 되었다.
